Every year at the Breeders’ Cup, one of the most difficult to handicap races is the BC Filly & Mare Turf. Run over 1 ¼ miles over grass, the F&M Turf has a way of paying horseplayers that don’t pound chalk. This year, one of the lowest-priced favorites on either Friday or Saturday takes to the grass in the Filly & Mare Turf. Can any horse beat the Chad Brown-trained Sistercharlie? Yes. Yes, a horse can. In fact, there’s a chance Sistercharlie is over in her form cycle. Check out the optimal trifecta ticket to play for the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf!

- Distance: 1 ¼ miles
- Surface: Turf
Key Horse: 3-Fleeting
Sistercharlie will be tough to beat, but the best horse in the race isn’t always the best horse to use on top in the trifecta. Aidan O’Brien enters a sneaky talented 3-year-old filly who could key a massive payout.
Fleeting has never won at this 1 ¼ mile distance. But, her 2 second-place finishes from 3 races were in a couple of the toughest grass events in Europe, the Group 2 Ribblesdale at the Ascot Meet, and the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera at Longchamp on the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe undercard.
Aiden O’Brien really knows how to get them ready for the Breeders’ Cup. He’ll have Fleeting on her toes on Saturday. Again, Sistercharlie will be tough to beat for the win money. Fleeting has the best shot of pulling off the upset and keying a huge trifecta payout.
Second Slot: 1-Irideesa, 2-Sistercharlie, 9-Villa Marina
Sistercharlie should most definitely finish second if she doesn’t win, right? Maybe, not. If Sistercharlie doesn’t win, she might not even hit the board. Horses have success in cycles. Sistercharlie has won 6 straight. She’s either at the top of her form cycle or just over the top of her form cycle. The reason she might be over the top is that although she won the Flower Bowl Invitational in her last, she didn’t look great doing so.
It makes sense to add a couple of other runners into the second slot. Those runners are Iridessa and Villa Marina.
Iridessa finished third to Billes don Brook in her last, the Sun Chariot Stakes. Before that, she won the Group 1 Rock Matron Stakes. She also won the Group 1 Pretty Polly back in June. Iridessa tends to take a race off and then comes back with a top effort. Expect her best on Saturday because she ran her dull race in the Sun Chariot.
Villa Marina beat Fleeting by a neck to win the Prix de l’Opera. She’s been on the fence since the win. Villa Marina has 3 wins and 2 seconds from 5 races at the distance. Like Iridessa, if Sistercharlie doesn’t flash her best, either could finish second behind Fleeting.
Third Slot: All
Hit the All button for the third slot for the Filly & Mare Turf trifecta. Again, the chalk is tough. However, if the chalk fails to win, who knows? The chalk might not even sneak into the Top 3.
