Belmont Park Picks for Friday, June 19
Race 7 – 4:32 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Turf – $40,000 Allowance Optional Claiming
Brad Cox has a couple entered into this 7 furlong race on Friday. Out of Trouble should offer close to favorite’s odds. We prefer the other Cox runner, First Appeal, to win. Brad sent this one to the bench after a second place finish in a race at this level over Aqueduct’s turf in November. The last time First Appeal ran off a layoff, the mare broke out with her best lifetime speed rating. We give her a big chance to get the picture taken.
Lovely La La goes first time for Michelle Nevin. Michelle wins 15% with horses racing first time for her. Because Chad Brown is La La’s former trainer, we must assume that Nevin’s got a live one on Friday.
Bruce Levine trained A Little Faith sure looks like a player in this. The Candy Ride sired filly has 2 wins, a second, and a third from 5 races. Use her on the top and bottom if you agree that she can win.
- Win: First Appeal
- Place: Lovely La La
- Show: A Little Faith
Race 8 – 5:04 pm ET – 6 ½ Furlongs Dirt –$40,000 Allowance Optional Claiming
Brad Cox trains an overlay that has a shot to win the eighth. Don’t expect Steam Engine to hold the 8/1 morning line. But there’s a lot of talent in the eighth on Friday. That means Steam Engine should at least offer 6/1 odds. Brad is too hot for us to keep Engine from the win slot.
Summer Bourbon is a talented racehorse. Trainer Rudy Rodriguez has yet to catch fire at Belmont. Like Rob Atras, who has also struggled, Rudy will get it going eventually. He could start to get it going with Summer Bourbon. Expect Bourbon to improve in its second off the bench.
Rob Atras trained Eye Luv Lulu has a shot to take this from the rail. The odds won’t be good enough to warrant a win bet, though. Don’t drop from your exotics.
- Win: Steam Engine
- Place: Summer Bourbon
- Show: Eye Luv Lulu
Race 9 – 5:36 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Inner Turf – $80,000 Sir Cat Stakes
We won’t get rich making Jack and Noah our top choice. But the Mark Casse sired colt sure looks like the runner to beat. Jack and Noah heads into this off an awesome second place finish by a head to 2/1 morning line chalk Chimney Rock. Noah can turn the tables on his rival.
Chimney Rock is a serious player. The Mike Maker trained runner got to Jack and Noah in the last race. We’re counting on Johnny V. aboard Jack and Noah in the rematch to make the difference. If you don’t agree with us, back the chalk to beat the top choice again.
Turned Aside is super-fast. But the American Pharoah sired runner goes for Linda Rice. So far, Linda hasn’t saddled a winner. Could her first be Turned Aside? Maybe. We’ll use on top and bottom of our exotics while sticking with Jack and Noah for our win bet.
- Win: Jack and Noah
- Place: Chimney Rock
- Show: Turned Aside
