Belmont Park Picks for Saturday, June 13
Race 8 – 5:04 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $56,000 Allowance
Linda Rice is 0-for-11 at Belmont Park. That won’t last, which is one of the reasons we like Officer Hutchy to win. Other reasons? Hutchy has a couple of wins and a couple of seconds from 4 lifetime races and should get a nice trip. She can get it done on June 13
Trainer Jeremiah Englehart wins 31% with beaten favorites. Behind the Couch offered 95 cents on the dollar in her last race. The 4-year-old filly failed to maintain a lead. That was last October, though. On Saturday, she could be ready to roll. Consider for the top spot if the 5/2 morning line odds drift.
Wailin Josie could skip into the trifecta. The Steve Jerkens trained runner has 2 wins from 3 races at Belmont Park. Josie should get a nice trip 2 to 3 lengths off the speed. If the pace is swift enough, who knows? If you’re looking for a longshot play to win, this one might be the perfect play.
- Win: Officer Hutchy
- Place: Behind the Couch
- Show: Wailin Josie
Race 9 – 5:36 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt –$300,000 G1 Ogden Phipps Stakes
Bill Mott trained Golden Award should be a in a perfect position to overtake Ollie’s Candy and Blamed in the stretch. Golden Award has 5 wins and 4 seconds from 12 races. She failed in her only Grade 1 try, but she’s good enough to beat this field.
Blamed could add some value to the exacta. The 10/1 morning line longshot figures to grab the lead from Ollie’s Candy. Also, Blamed is going into this off a nice tune-up victory. She can hang on for second.
Ollie’s Candy is the 8/5 morning line chalk. It’s tough to go against the John Sadler trained mare. There are a couple of knocks, though. First, she’s never raced at Belmont. Horses don’t always like Belmont’s dirt. It’s different than what they’re used too. Second, she ran a couple of tough, grueling races, in March and April. How much did those races take out of Ollie?
- Win: Golden Award
- Place: Blamed
- Show: Ollie’s Candy
Race 10 – 6:08 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – $45,000 Starter Allowance
Don’t be surprised if Hurricane Breeze’s odds drop significantly from the 4/1 morning line. The Mike Maker trained Summer Front sired filly lost her last race by a nose. Also, this field appears to lack true competition. As the second choice, Breeze could go off 5/2, maybe even 2/1. At the price, she’s still has the best chance of winning.
Bean Counter keeps getting played to win and she keeps finishing second. The Todd Pletcher trained runner has gotten the place in 2 straight and 3-of-4. She can win. But, again, she should offer low odds because she always does and seems to prefer not getting her picture taken.
Princess Fawzia won at first asking. It was a slow race. Then again, she beat her competition by 2 lengths. She runs without blinkers, which means she might be one of those types that runs as fast as she must. Consider for the top spot if you don’t like the low odds on Hurricane Breeze.
- Win: Hurricane Breeze
- Place: Bean Counter
- Show: Princess Fawzia
