Betting 2024 Belmont Stakes Field

The Belmont Stakes field is set.

Second place Kentucky Derby finisher Sierra Leone is the 9/5 favorite followed by Todd Pletcher trained Mindframe at 7/2.

Mystik Dan, the Derby winner and second place finisher in the Preakness, is at 5/1.

While the favorite boasts a strong showing at Churchill Downs, the demanding 1.5-mile distance of the Belmont Stakes can bring about unexpected outcomes.

2024 Belmont Stakes Analysis

Seize the Grey 8-1

The Preakness winner would have been an absolute play against if Fierceness had entered.

Todd Pletcher thought better of entering Fierceness and instead will roll with Mindframe and Protective.

Can Seize the Grey wire the Belmont field? It’s not going to be easy. Mindframe breaks from post 10 but has the speed to clear.

Consider all angles before backing the Lukas runner.

Resilience 10-1

The Wood Memorial winner made a menacing move around the final turn at Churchill Downs before flattening out in the stretch.

Resilience had a tough trip throughout, going wide around both turns so we must give him credit for giving it a try.

This one has some talent and Bill Mott skipped the Preakness.

The Mott runner is a live longshot.

Mystik Dan 5-1

The Derby winner couldn’t catch a loose on the lead Seize the Grey in the Preakness.

Seize the Grey won’t be loose on the lead in the Belmont, which means Mystik Dan should sit a nice trip right behind the front runners.

If he has anything left in the tank, Dan can win this.

But 3 races in the span of 5 weeks is tough. Only bet on Dan to win if you genuinely believe.

The Wine Steward 15-1

The Wine Steward has 3 wins and 3 seconds in 6 races.

So why is a horse with such a terrific record 15-1.

For starters, The Wine Steward doesn’t seem fast enough.

Also, there are better stalkers in this race, like Mystik Dan and Mindframe.

Antiquarian 12-1

Antiquarian won the Peter Pan, yes, but this year’s Belmont prep wasn’t nearly as deep as it was last year.

Antiquarian, like The Wine Steward which finished behind Antiquarian and in second, doesn’t seem to have enough speed to contend with Mystik Dan, Sierra Leone, Seize the Grey, and Mindframe.

Dornoch 15-1

Dornoch did nothing in the Kentucky Derby.

Also, the fastest he has races was when winning the Remsen as a two year old, which means he hasn’t improved. Pass.

Protective 20-1

Protective is a maiden. The 20-1 odds make the Todd Pletcher trained runner an underlay.

Protective should be closer to 30-1 in this. So we can’t endorse to win the Belmont. 

Honor Marie 12-1

Here’s another that hasn’t run fast enough to beat the top contenders in this.

For sure, the second place finish in the Louisiana Derby was nice.

But the follow up in the Kentucky Derby was a mess. Some horses aren’t good enough to contend in a classic race.

Honor Marie has the look of one of those.

Sierra Leone 9/5

There morning line favorite for sure can win this but before throwing money behind the Chad Brown trained runner consider that Sierra Leone did lose to Mystik Dan.

In addition, Leone beat an awful field when winning the Blue Grass.

Again, the chalk can win, but

Mindframe 7/2

Here’s your Belmont Stakes winner. In 2 races, Mindframe has been brilliant.

The Pletcher runner broke his maiden by 13 ½ lengths.

Then in the follow up race, Mindframe dusted his opponents by 7 ½.

The second choice on the morning line can rate, take the lead, or sit in the garden spot and pounce.

No matter what strategy jockey Irad Ortiz chooses, Mindframe heads to the winner’s circle at Saratoga shortly after crossing the finish line first.
