Santa Anita opens their doors for their winter spring meet on Tuesday, December 26. Plenty of graded stakes happen at the Great Race Place on December 26, including three Grade 1 events: the La Brea, the Malibu, and the American Oaks.

Phil D’Amato trains two of the four in Hong Kong Harry and Balnikhov. John Sadler puts the saddle on Missed the Cut, and John Shirreffs will look to steal it on the front end with Astronaut.

Easter, War At Sea, Tio Magico, and St Anthony will also attract betting dollars.

Top Stakes Races Third Week of December: Friday, December 15th – Saturday, December 16th, 2023

Only one graded races happens this week, the Grade 3 Bayakoa at Los Alamitos. The Bayakoa takes place on Friday. Also on Friday, Remington Park runs the Springboard Mile. Then on Saturday, Gulfstream, Oaklawn, and Turfway run non-graded restricted stakes.

Based on the morning line odds, Phil D’Amato or Bob Baffert are likely to saddle the Grade 3 Bayakoa winner. D’Amato runs Desert Dawn, the 6-to-5 morning line favorite.

Baffert goes with 2-to-1 second choice Midnight Memories. Turnerloose, another D’Amato runner, is the 5-to-1 third choice while another Baffert runner saddles the fourth choice, Ganadora at 6-to-1.

Smoothlikebuttah, Violent Runner, and Trouville will also enter the gate.

Doug O’Neill trained Raging Torrent is the 3-to-1 morning line second choice. The Maximum Mischief sired colt offers a higher morning line than 5-to-2 Otto the Conqueror.

Steve Asmussen trains Otto. So the morning line favorite is likely to break from the gate holding the chalk moniker.

Luis Saez steps aboard 7-to-2 third choice Glengarry. Gettysburg Address, trained by Brad Cox, offers a fair 6-to-1 morning line. Magic Grant is at 8-to-1. My Buddy Mel, Rhino Runner, and Third Street are all at 20-to-1 on the morning line.

So if you can make a case against Wolfie’s Dynasty, you should get paid. Packs a Wahlop, Cellist, War Bomber, and Kitodan could for sure challenge Wolfie’s Dynasty.

This weekend’s thoroughbred stakes action is light on graded races. But just because the action is light, it doesn’t mean that there is zero stakes races happening this weekend. The Grade 2 Starlet, the only graded event of the weekend, takes place at Los Alamitos. Aqueduct runs the always popular Garland of Roses, and Louisiana has their champions day.

Brad Cox puts the saddle on Olga Isabel. So we should expect that one to also attract betting dollars. Bill Mott’s You Look Cold and George Weaver trained Headland will also get some looks.

Autumns Strong Man, Scooteria, and Brian’s Iron Mike should also run. Since Louisiana Champions Day is restricted to Louisiana-breds, don’t discount a contender just because of its breeding.

Over at Del Mar, Bing Crosby’s favorite hangout runs the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby over the lawn on Saturday and the Grade 1 Matriarch on Sunday.

In year’s past, the Grade 3 Remsen winner has jumped onto the list of winter book Kentucky Derby favorites. This season, we should definitely see a Derby fave emerge from the race because Todd Pletcher, Richard Dutrow, and Bill Mott will all saddle runners.

Pletcher’s equines, Moonlight and Private Desire, both have a shot. Dutrow runner Where’s Chris beat Private Desire in the Nashau Stakes in the last.

Mott puts the saddle on Billal. If you’re looking outside the likely favorites, consider last out maiden winner Dornoch from the Danny Gargan barn. The Good Magic sired colt looked great when breaking the maiden.

Both of Chad Brown’s runners, Accretive and Dr. Ardito have a chance. Pipeline and Brad Cox trained Everso Mischievous can also get it done.
