Saturday, March 2nd, 2024
Aqueduct Racetrack

Jorge Delgado trained Super Chow is likely to be a close to odds on favorite. Chow won the Grade 3 Toboggan in the last.

Gotham Stakes

Grade 3

Saturday, March 2nd, 2024
Aqueduct Racetrack

Brad Cox and Todd Pletcher should send the three favorites to the starting gate. Cox trains two of the three, Just a Touch and Bergen. Cox believes both can win the Derby.

Pletcher’s horse is Eliminate. Sired by Curlin, Eliminate broke the maiden on Feb 10. Linda Rice trained El Grande O, and Deterministic from the Cristophe Clement barn, could have a say in the outcome.

Saturday, March 2nd, 2024
Gulfstream Park

Just F Y I, first in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and trained by Bill Mott, could go off at even money. She’s a legit Kentucky Oaks contender.

Todd Pletcher trained Leslie’s Rose and Queen’s Martini from the Danny Gargan barn will also attract action. Miss Sayely and Fiona’s Magic are a couple of contenders that may fly under the radar.

Fountain of Youth

Grade 2
1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year olds

Saturday, March 2nd, 2024
Gulfstream Park

Two will attract the most betting dollars: Speak Easy, which could go off at around 8/5, and Gustavo Delgado trained Victory Avenue.

Speak Easy hails from Todd Pletcher’s barn. Victory Avenue finished second in the Swale in the last. Frankie’s Empire, the Swale winner, and Dornoch, which won the Remsen, are two others that horseplayers should check out.

San Felipe Stakes | US Horse Racing Odds MyBookie Betting Lines for the Races

San Felipe Stakes

Grade 2
1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year olds

Saturday, March 2nd, 2024
Santa Anita Park

Bob Baffert saddles six. Three will contend, Coach Prime, Wynstock, and Muth. However, the one that will go off the chalk is Justify sired Scatify.

Mc Vay will also get some action. Baffert’s other three: Imagination, Cornell, and Wine Me Up, could have a say in the outcome.

San Felipe Stakes | US Horse Racing Odds MyBookie Betting Lines for the Races

Santa Anita Handicap

Grade 1
1 ¼ miles dirt – 4 year olds and up

Saturday, March 2nd, 2024
Santa Anita Park

Phil D’Amato trained Newgrange won the Grade 2 San Pasqual in the last. Newgrange will go off the favorite. If Newgrange is to win the race, though, the D’Amato trainee will have to beat former trainer Bob Baffert.

Baffert saddles Reincarnate, Newgate, and Mr. Fisk. All three could upset Newgrange. Other Big Cap contenders this year include Mixto, Highland Falls, Salesman, and a couple from the Saffie A. Joseph Jr. barn, Skippylongstocking and O’Conner.

Carousel Stakes

Race
6 furlongs dirt – 4 year old fillies and mares

Saturday, February 24th, 2024
Oaklawn Park

Zeitlos should go off around even money. The Steve Asmussen trained runner faces a top competitor in Mucho Macho Girl, but Zeitlos breaks to the outside where the jockey can see what Macho Girl is going to do.

Longshots with a chance include I’m the Boss of Me, Let’s Be Clear, and Adaline Julia. All three could hit the board. If the top two falter, any of the three could pick up the pieces.

Honeybee Stakes

Grade 3
1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year old fillies

Saturday, February 24th, 2024
Oaklawn Park

West Omaha, trained by Brad Cox, finished first in the Silverbulletday in the last. For sure, West Omaha goes off the favorite, but she may not be the top play.

Tom Amoss trained Alys Beach looked good when finishing third in the Grade 1 Alcibiades. Amoss doesn’t run them unless there ready. So if you’re looking for an alternative to the Cox equine, consider backing Alys Beach.

Banner Gold, Honor Cat, and Neom Beach all have a shot. Asmussen trains Neom Beach. So we know that one will be live.

Razorback Handicap

Grade 3
1 1/6 miles dirt – 4 year olds and up

Saturday, February 24th, 2024
Oaklawn Park

Throw a dart in the Razorback. Will the winner be Steve Asmussen trained Magic Tap? Promise Keeper from the Robertino Diodoro barn? How about Kenny McPeek charge Escapologist?

The favorite is likely to be another McPeek runner, Frosted Departure. Octane, Ain’t Life Grand, Seize the Night, and Speed Bias all have chances.

Rebel Stakes

Grade 2
1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year olds

Saturday, February 24th, 2024
Oaklawn Park

Five runners should demand the most attention. Steve Asmussen and Kenny McPeek train two each. The Asmussen runners are Carbone and Dimatic, a last out maiden winner.

McPeek’s equines are Northern Flame and Common Defense. The other runner that will get attract betting dollars, and the likely favorite, is Timberlake from the Brad Cox barn. Timberlake hasn’t run since the BC Juvenile. So be wary about backing the Cox chalk.

Santa Ana Stakes

Grade 3
1 ¼ miles turf – 4 year old fillies and mares

Saturday, February 24th, 2024

Richard Mandella and John Shirreffs could have star turf fillies in their barns. Mandella trained Linda’s Gift has a ton of promise. She finished first in the Astra Stakes in her last.

Shirreffs puts the saddle on Justique, third in the Megahertz in her last. Others that should receive attention include Duvet Day, Customer List trained by Chad Brown, Khinjani, and School Dance.

Saturday, February 17th, 2024
Gulfstream Park

Edward Plesa Jr. trained Maryquitecontrary should go off the favorite. The likely chalk finished third in the Grade 2 Inside Information in the last, which was the best performance of the projected contenders.

Honor D Lady will have her fans. Saffie Joseph Jr. always gets them ready to run. So if she enters, she’s a must consider. Another contender is Tizzy in the Sky. Todd Pletcher trains and this one finished second in the Grade 3 Go for Wand in the last.

Kenneth McPeek trained V V’s Dream is the most accomplished. The Mitole sired runner finished third in the graded race in the last. The only question is the distance.

Tarifa, Pennick, and Perfect Shot will all be tough. Brendan Walsh trained Intricate will also be difficult to beat. Alpine Princess, first in the Untapable Stakes in the last, could end up the favorite because she hails from Brad Cox’s barn.

Risen Star Stakes

Grade 2
1 1/8 miles dirt – 3 year olds

Saturday, February 17th, 2024
Fair Grounds Racetrack

Among the four projected favorites: Honor Marie, Sierra Leone, Moonlight, and Real Men Violin, the favorite is likely to be Todd Pletcher trained Moonlight. Fourth in the Grade 2 Remsen in the last, Moonlight, like all of Pletcher’s three year olds, should have developed since the Remsen.

Chad Brown trained Sierra Leone finished ahead of Moonlight in the Remsen. Expect Sierra Leone to go off a close second choice. Tizzy Indy could improve enough to win this. So keep that one in mind when handicapping the Risen Star.

Change of Command finished first in an allowance at Gulfstream in the last. Patriot Spirit, West Saratoga, and Copper Tax are the longshots to consider. Tireless will try to go maiden win to graded victory for Pletcher.

Bob Baffert has the likely favorite in Malibu Moon sired Nothing Like You. Frankie Dettori steps aboard for the Baffert horse.

Richard Mandella hopes to upset Bob with Kopion, the Grade 3 Santa Ynez winner. Kopion may go off at overlay odds. So we must consider. Great Forty Eight, from the Tim Yakteen barn, is the other equine to consider.

Holy Bull Stakes | Grade 3

1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year olds
Saturday, February 3rd, 2024

Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Fierceness is going to be an odds on favorite to take his first race of the year. But the Todd Pletcher trainee might require an event to get it going.

Backing a horse like Hades, which won an allowance in the last, or Otello, the Mucho Macho Man stakes winner, might be the better play. Dancing Groom, No More Time, and Domestic Product also have a shot.

Oaklawn Park Picks for Friday, April 3

Race 4 – 3:35 pm ET – 1 1/6 Miles Dirt – $32,000 Claiming

Mighty Manfred has lost its last couple of races by a combined 28 lengths. The 6-year-old gelding takes a steep dive from the $50K claiming level, though. Also, the last was Manfred’s first since June 2019. Trainer Steve Asmussen owns and trains.

5/2 morning line Horse Racing Odds chalk Malibu Pro finished second in a $20,000 starter allowance going this distance in the last. Former top SoCal jockey Martin Garcia rides. Garcia will put this one into the mix early. If Malibu repeats the last performance, the 7-year-old gelding probably wins.

Asmussen’s other runner, Potomac, is another with a shot. Throw out the race in February. That was Potomac’s first since last December. It was also an $86,000 Allowance. This is a huge drop. Like Mighty Manfred, any sort of improvement could lead to a win.

  • Win: Mighty Manfred
  • Place: Malibu Pro
  • Show: Potomac

Race 8 – 5:38 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt – $100,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Stone cold closer Rated R Superstar always requires a fast pace. The 6/1 morning line choice should get it here. Superstar has been running in much better races. Lenstar, Pirate’s Punch, and Gato Guapo will be winging it on the front end. The closer could take win honors in this.

Pirate’s Punch last raced in the Grade 3 Mineshaft. The speedy son of Shanghai Bobby finished third in the graded event. This is a step-down but there’s other speed, which could soften the chalk up enough for Rated R Superstar to go blowing by. Punch is the one to catch.

Brad Cox saddles Kurilov in the eighth. The Lookin At Lucky sired 7-year-old has a devastating closing kick. There should be enough speed for Kurilov to have a say in the outcome. But it’s hard to see this one beating either Rated R Superstar or Pirate’s Punch.

  • Win: Rated R Superstar
  • Place: Pirate’s Punch
  • Show: Kurilov

Race 9 – 6:09 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $61,000 Allowance

4-year-old filly Shocking Fast heads into this off a maiden score. Although that can be a recipe for disaster, trainer Steve Asmussen wins 22% with his last out maiden victors. Jockey Ricardo Santana sticks while Shocking Fast won the maiden by 5 ½ lengths.

Chalk Gold Credit is a Goldencents sired, Phil D’Amato trained filly that finished third in a $90K allowance in her last. D’Amato wins 22% with horses running second-time for him. But the 2/1 morning line Horse Racing Odds dissuade from a win bet.

The great D. Wayne Lukas puts the saddle on Crystal Lake. The 3/1 second choice on the morning line should get a decent setup. Lake has a win, 2 seconds, and 4 third-place finishes from 9 starts. Let’s peg Lake for the show money.

  • Win: Shocking Fast
  • Place: Gold Credit
  • Show: Crystal Lake

Maker’s Mark Mile | Grade 1

Track: Keeneland Racecourse, Lexington, Kentucky
When: Friday, April 14, 2023
Race type: Thoroughbred – Flat racing
Distance: 1 mile turf – 4 year olds & up

The Maker’s Mark Mile is one of the year’s top mile turf races. This year, only five runners have committed to going in the MMM. One of the reasons for the lack of contenders could be because Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Modern Games has entered.

Connections for Chez Pierre, Dr. Zempf, Speaking Scout, and In Love aren’t afraid to take on the champ. Of the four, Dr. Zempf arrives from Chad Brown’s barn. The last out allowance winner takes a massive step up in class, but Brown is a master grass trainer.

The Lexington is the final chance for 3 year olds to secure a Kentucky Derby starting spot. No doubt, Keith Desormeaux trained Confidence Game will go off the favorite. The Grade 2 Rebel winner should be tough to beat.

Brad Cox trained Victory Formation bombed in the Risen Star in the last. Before the ninth place finish, the Cox runner had won three straight. Others expected to enter include Curly Larry and Mo, Street Sense sired last out maiden winner First Mission, and Midnight Rising.

At least six runners should break from the gate in the Jenny Wiley Stakes. Chad Brown trained In Italian will be the morning line chalk. The speedy 5-year-old finished second behind Tuesday in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf in her last.

Horse Racing Odds & Picks March 8th Edition

Gulfstream Park – Saturday, March 12

Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie Stakes – 5 furlongs turf – 4 year olds and up

Grade 3 Chilukki winner Obligatory figures to go off the chalk in what should be a terrific rendition of the Hurricane Bertie. Four Graces, which finished second in the Inside Information in her last, Feeling Mischief, Starship Nala, and Bramble Berry will also attract action.

Tampa Bay Downs – Saturday, March 12

Grade 3 Florida Oaks – 1 1/16 miles turf – 3 year olds

The Florida Oaks is shaping up as one of the most competitive races of the week. Graham Motion trained Vergara might attract the most action. But Hail To from the Tom Albertrani barn and Claude McGaughey runner Skims will also garner some play. Chad Brown puts the saddle on Spicer. So expect that runner to go off no worse than fourth choice.

Grade 2 Hillsborough Stakes – 1 1/8 miles turf – 4 year olds and up

Roger Attfield trained Lady Speightspeare, and Chad Brown runner Kalifornia Queen figure to go off first choice and second choice. Brown’s other entrant, Bleecker Street, warrants a long look. The Quality Road sired miss won the Grade 3 Endeavour in her last start. Last out maiden winner Take Charge Ro could go off at overlay odds. The Bryan Lynch trained runner has gotten better with every race.

Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby – 1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year olds

Horseplayers will settle on making Todd Pletcher runner Major General, who took the Iroquois Stakes in his last, or Sam F. Davis winner Classic Causeway the chalk. Both look difficult to beat. Last out maiden winner Happy Boy Rocket, trained by Bill Mott, has the breeding and ran good enough to consider. But only back Happy if the odds are right.

Oaklawn Park – Saturday, March 12

Grade 2 Azeri Stakes – 1 1/16 miles dirt – 4 year old fillies and mares

Based on the likely entrants, Shedaresthedevil, Brad Cox’s superstar filly, should easily take the Azeri Stakes. Pauline’s Pearl, She’s All Wolfe, Golden Curl, Lady Mystify, Ava’s Grace and Lavender should have no chance versus the Cox runner. However, pay attention to how Shedaresthedevil warms up. If the Cox equine isn’t feeling like herself, one of the underdogs could pull off the upset.

Santa Anita Park – Saturday, March 12

Grade 3 San Luis Rey Stakes – 1 ½ miles turf – 4 year olds and up

This year’s San Luis Rey is wide open. Say the Word, Acclimate, Current, Red King, Award Winner, Henley’s Joy, Dicey Mo Chara, Offlee Naughty, and Airman can all run to the winner’s circle. If you plan on betting the San Luis, make sure to study every entrant’s past performances before settling on your key horse.

1 ½ miles turf – 4 year old fillies and mares
Graham Motion trained Harajuku should attract plenty of action. A couple of other runners that should attract action are Champagne Ivey from the Saffie Joseph Jr. barn, and Cristophe Clement trained Beautiful Lover. Scarabea, Lovely Lucky, and Family Way should also run.

Grade 2 Pan American Stakes

1 ½ miles turf – 4 year olds and up
Todd Pletcher saddles Abaan, a winner of 3 straight before finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida in the gelding’s last. The horse that won the Mac Diarmida, Temple, will also run in the Pan American. So will Shug McGaughey trained Baker’s Bay, Novo Sol from the Saffie Joseph Jr. barn, and Cristophe Clement trained and likely chalk Gufo.

Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks

1 1/6 miles dirt – 3 year old fillies
So far, only three horses are confirmed for the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks. Todd Pletcher trained Goddess of Fire finished second behind Turnerloose in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra in her last. Jonathan Thomas will put the saddle on last out maiden winner Catiche, and undefeated and Grade 2 Davona Dale winner Kathleen O. will go for trainer Shug McGaughey.

Grade 1 Florida Derby

1 1/8 miles dirt – 3 year olds
At least ten 3 year olds will run in this year’s Florida Derby. No doubt, Saffie Joseph trained White Abbario will attract the most action. The Grade 3 Holy Bull winner is superfast. Simplification won the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes in his last. Expect the Antonio Sano equine to also attract betting dollars. Charge It, trained by Todd Pletcher, Shipsational, Tamp Bay Derby winner Classic Causeway, and Pappacap may also enter the starting gate.

Grade 3 Fantasy Stakes

1 1/6 miles dirt – 3 year old fillies
Bob Baffert will put the saddle on likely Fantasy Stakes favorite Eda. The Munnings sired miss has won four straight, including the Grade 1 Starlet and the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel in her last. Brad Cox trained Bubble Rock heads into this after winning the Cincinnati Trophy. Cox has another contender in Mariah’s Fortune. Yuugiri and Dream Lith will be looking for bounce back efforts.

Grade 1 Arkansas Derby

1 1/8 miles dirt – 3 year olds
There is no stand out entered to run in this year’s Arkansas Derby. Kavod, Chasing Time, Barber Road, Un Ojo, D. Wayne Lukas trained Secret Oath, Ben Diesel, Cyberknife from the Brad Cox barn, and We the People all have a shot.

The most interesting is Doppelganger. The Into Mischief sired runner used to go for Bob Baffert. Now trained by Tim Yakteen, Doppelganger has a lot of talent. So if Yakteen can get him to run his best, Doppelganger can win the Arkansas Derby.
