Betting the Top Stakes Races for the Weekend

The 2024 Breeders’ Cup Fields re taking shape.

The BC Classic remains the most interesting event as Aidan O’Brien has yet to confirm that future book fave City of Troy will join the starting gate.

The Distaff is shaping up as a two horse race.

Bob Baffert has a strong hand in the Juvenile but Chad Brown is likely to have the chalk and Japan is bringing a massive contingent to Del Mar.

City of Troy, Future Book Fave to Win the Classic, has Yet to Confirm

Owner John Magnier wants to try City of Troy in the Classic but trainer Aidan O’Brien has yet to confirm.

For one thing, City of Troy has been an excellent runner on grass.

All of his major wins have happened on the lawn.

On the flip side, City of Troy calls Justify, the 2018 Triple Crown winner, his sire.

Dirt breeding is there, which is why City of Troy is the future chalk to win the Classic.

If City of Troy enters the Classic, he could be an odds on favorite.

Fierceness, Sierra Leone, and Forever Young are talented horses, but they aren’t on City of Troy’s level.

This is one year where our Pick 4 and Pick 6 ticket single could be in the final BC race of the day.

If City of Troy Doesn’t Go, Fierceness Will Break from the Gate the Classic Chalk

If O’Brien decides to enter City of Troy in the Breeders’ Cup Turf instead of the BC Classic, then Todd Pletcher trained Fierceness will go off the chalk.

Winner of three Grade 1 races this year: the Florida Derby, Haskell Invitational, and the Travers Stakes, Fierceness showed that he can both take the lead and coast to a win and rate if required.

He’s grown up big time since the Kentucky Derby debacle that saw him finish in the back of the pack.

But we should note that horses that win the Travers at Saratoga don’t always transfer their form to other tracks.

If City of Troy doesn’t go in the Classic, Fierceness will be a vulnerable fave for sure.

Idiomatic Versus Thorpedo Anna Set in Distaff

More than two horses will run in the Distaff but only two will attract strong action.

Kenny McPeek trained and Kentucky Oaks winner Thorpedo Ann is the future book favorite over last year’s Distaff winner and Brad Cox trained Idiomatic.

Idiomatic is a serious race horse.

She’s won 13-of-17 and has never finished worse than third.

Idiomatic has pocketed close to $4 million for her owners.

She’s got the goods to beat Thorpedo Anna.

Anna, though, almost caught Fierceness in the Travers.

She may have been the better horse considering she had to float wide and make furious rush in the stretch to make up ground.

If these two are at the best in the Distaff, the race could go down as a historic stretch duel ala Songbird and Beholder in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Distaff that went to Beholder.

Baffert Ready to Run at Least Two in Juvenile, but Brown’s Chancer McPatrick the Fave

Bob Baffert plans on running three in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile: Gaming, Getaway Car, and Citizen Bull.

But Bob won’t have the chalk.

Favoritism is likely to go to Chancer McPatrick, Chad Brown’s Grade 1 Hopeful and Grade 1 Champagne winner.

Chancer McPatrick won the two top East Coast preps for the Juvenile and should be the chalk as they break from the gate.

Don’t discount the Baffert horses, though.

The BC is at Del Mar where Bob’s horses rule.

Chancer McPatrick is going to be at his best to keep the Juvenile trophy out of Baffert’s hands.

Japan Hoping to Enter Horses in Multiple Breeders’ Cup Races

Japan’s thoroughbred industry is bringing a strong contingent to the U.S. for the 2024 Breeders’ Cup.

Japan based horses will run in the Juvenile, most of the turf races, and even in the BC Sprint.

Forever Young is likely to go in the Classic.

The Kentucky Derby’s third place finisher was undefeated up until the race.

Forever Young is a dirt horse and will relish the 1 ¼ miles of the Classic.

If City of Troy doesn’t go, Forever Young is a legit contender to win the top race on the BC Card.
