Golden Gate Fields Picks for Friday, May 15
Race 5 – 5:45 pm ET – 6 Furlongs All-Weather – $35,000 Claiming
Trainer Robert Reid wins 20% with horses racing off a 46-90 days layoff. Reid puts the saddle on 5/1 on the morning line Sequentially. The Forestry sired 6-year-old horse hasn’t won since Nov. 3. But she gets the right setup here with so much speed signed on. Also, her 6-5-3 record from 17 over Golden Gate’s all-weather makes her a solid key horse.
It can get chalky at GG Fields, which is why we won’t bring anything up if you choose to pound Passionate Reward at the windows. The Congrats sired gelding has 4 wins and a second in its last 5. That makes the Isidiro Tamayo trainee the one to beat.
Bear Chum, another Tamayo trainee, has won 3 in a row. The 7-year-old gelding has 5 wins from 7 starts over the all-weather. Chum can win. No arguments here if you make this one first instead of Sequentially.
- Win: Sequentially
- Place: Passionate Reward
- Show: Bear Chum
Race 8 – 7:15 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf –$50,000 Starter Allowance
Most horseplayers will discount the chances of 10/1 on the morning line Rustic Canyon. Trainer Isidiro Tamayo has great states for horses under these conditions, though. Isidiro wins 15% with horses off a layoff, 22% with his turf starters, and 19% going all-weather to turf. Plus, the Unusual Heat gelding has a 2-2-3 record over the GG lawn.
Trainer Jonathan Wong hopes to pick up where he left off. The 30% winning trainer has a chance to do that with 3/1 Electoral. The second choice on the morning line, Electoral has never raced on the grass. No worries. Wong wins 24% with first time turf runners. He wins 26% with horses off a layoff and 27% with runners going from all-weather to the sod.
5-year-old roan East Rand is another double-digit morning line entrant with a shot. The Victor Trujillo trained runner could outclass these. So, consider using on top in your exotics.
- Win: Rustic Canyon
- Place: Electoral
- Show: East Rand
Race 9 – 7:45 pm ET – 5 ½ Furlongs All-Weather – $5,000 Claiming
Tamayo trained runner Far West has two wins and a third in its last 3 races. It just so happens that West’s last 3 races are the only events the Bodemeister gelding has raced over the all-weather. It means the top choice has never finished off the board at Golden Gate. Jockey Juan Hernandez should have no trouble tucking this one right behind the speed.
Trainer Reid France has spotted Power Times Two well. Reid never races the 3-time winner for more than $5,000. If the speed horses run each other into the ground, Power should be in a good position for the win. Consider if you’re not sold on Far West.
Mercy Rule cuts back in distance from 1 mile to 5 ½ furlongs. Trainer Steve Miyadi wins at 29%. So, we can’t discount. But the 4-year-old gelding should get over bet here. Rule is tough to put on top after considering the expected odds.
- Win: Far West
- Place: Power Times Two
- Show: Mercy Rule
