Golden Gate Fields Picks for Thursday, May 14

Race 1 – 3:45 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf – $50,000 Starter Allowance

No runner is bred better for the lawn than the Michael Lenzini trained Mulhima. Sired by Mukhadram and from Excellerator, an Irish-bred broodmare, Mulhima has never won over the turf. Last February she raced at Meydan in Dubai, though. You only get to race in Dubai if you’re a quality equine. She should outclass this field on Thursday.

Trainer Steve Sherman saddles Posh Holly. The four-year-old filly has decent turf form with a win, a second, and a third from 9 races over the sod. Jockey Frank Alvarado should put Holly into a position to win. Consider for the top spot if your not sold on Mulhima.

Buyback goes first time for trainer Matthew Chew. Matthew wins 16% first-time off the claim. That’s a nice percentage. Also, the Mucho Macho Man sired 4-year-old filly could get an easy lead. That makes Buyback a must use in all three trifecta slots.

  • Win: Mulhima
  • Place: Posh Holly
  • Show: Buyback

Race 7 – 6:42 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf –$12,500 Claiming

After 4 straight over the all-weather, Moonshine Annie returns to her favorite surface. The Ed Moger Jr. trained runner’s lone win is on the grass. 5 of her 6 second-place finishes happened over the lawn while 4 third-place finishes were in turf events. She should get a nice stalking trip behind Say It With Roses and Loretta.

Of the two front-runners, Say It With Roses looks best. The 5-year-old mare drops from $20,000 claimers. Also, Loretta breaks to the inside of Roses. That gives jockey William Antongeorgi III the advantage over Loretta’s pilot, David Lopez.

Odessa could add to the pace. But the Jonathan Wong trained chalk may prefer the all-weather. Odessa will go off an underlay because Wong has won 30% this year. We’ll use but we won’t use on top.

  • Win: Moonshine Annie
  • Place: Say It With Roses
  • Show: Odessa

Race 9 – 7:42 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – $12,500 Claiming

Golden Gate’s nightcap on its first day back could produce an overlay winner. 8/1 morning line Conquest Sabre Cat has a much better shot than the odds indicate. The Isidoro Tamayo trained runner has 7 wins from 25 jaunts over the lawn. The 7-year-old gelding won 3 straight over the grass last fall. Tamayo wins 22% with claimers, 22% on the turf, and 19% going all-weather to turf. Give the overlay a massive shot.

Thomas Bell trained Soberano can win this. The Elusive City trained 4-year-old gelding takes a big class drop from $20,000. Jockey Julien Couton rode this one to a third-place finish in that higher level race. Couton should put Soberano into a position for the victory on Wednesday. If you’re not in love with the overlay, Soberano is a 7/2 shot with a chance.

Eldritch is 3/1 on the morning line. Trainer Mark Glatt does well with horses off a layoff, winning 19%. The Dark Angel sired gelding loves the lawn. But Eldritch is a closer lacking a ton of speed. We’ll relegate to third.

  • Win: Conquest Sabre Cat
  • Place: Soberano
  • Show: Eldritch
