Horse Racing Picks for Gulfstream Park on March 25

Race 7 – 4:05 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – Claiming $14,000

Keepsakekitten won’t offer much in the way of odds at 9/5 on the morning line. But the combination of Saffie Joseph training and Luis Saez riding has become one of the best in Florida. Keepsakekitten ran a top race at Gulfstream Park back in January. The Kitten’s Joy runner heads to the claiming ranks for the first time on Wednesday and has 2 wins and a second in 4 lifetime races. This is a winning move for Joseph, dropping off a win. We won’t get odds but we should cash.

For second, why not take a shot on Sun Squall? The 15/1 Horse Racing Odds morning line runner goes first time on the turf for trainer Martin Wolfson. Sun Squall has run races that compete with these. That work on March 5 points to a top effort. If Squall takes to the grass, the gelding could pull off the upset win.

Earthquake broke his maiden on the turf. The horse came right back and won a $16,000 claimer over the slop by 4 lengths in its first against winners. He can pull off the upset at a nice 8/1 morning line. Consider for the win if you don’t want to swallow low odds on Keepsakekitten and aren’t sold on Sun Squall.

  • Win: Keepsakekitten
  • Place: Sun Squall
  • Show: Earthquake

Race 8 – 4:36 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – Allowance OC $100,000

Not only is Race 8 an optional-claimer for $100,000 but it also offers a purse for $53K. That’s why so many top runners have entered for the event. One of those runners is early-presser Quijote. The Georgina Baxter charge has a 4-4-1 record from 8 tries at this distance. Quijote should get a nice stalking trip behind Dak Attack and The Tabulator. There’s nothing wrong with the 9/2 morning line.

Luis Saez rides Dak Attack. The strategy is obvious. Luis will rush to the lead and try to go gate-to-wire. There’s other speed in this race, which makes those tactics a tough sell. Second seems plausible, though.

Fast Pass, the morning line chalk, comes from the clouds. That’s why it’s tough to back the favorite for the top spot. However, the 7-year-old always fires. Pass could beat these just because he’s the classiest animal in the race. We’ll keep the chalk in the exotics. But placing win bets on closers in a 6-furlong race at Gulfstream leads to more losses than wins.

  • Win: Quijote
  • Place: Dak Attack
  • Show: Fast Pass

Race 9 – 5:07 pm ET – 1 ½ Miles Turf – Allowance OC $25,000

There’s a lot to like about runner Vegas Kitten. The 5-year-old gelding goes first time for trainer Mike Maker, drops from the $40,000 claiming level, doesn’t run for a tag, and gets Paco Lopez. VK can lead or stalk in this.

Trainer Kenny McPeek puts the saddle on last-out maiden winner Indian Counselor. The 4-year-old gelding should have no trouble getting the distance. Sire Paynter ran well in the Belmont Stakes in his day. Also, top grass jock Julien Leparoux climbs aboard.

9/5 Horse Racing Odds on the morning line Lemonist looks strong. The odds don’t justify a win bet, though. Not when we consider the massive drop. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. puts the chalk up for the claim. That’s never a good sign. Beware for the win but use in the exotics.

  • Win: Vegas Kitten
  • Place: Indian Counselor
  • Show: Lemonist
