Horse Racing Picks for Gulfstream Park on March 26
Race 7 – 4:05 pm ET – 1 1/16 Mile Dirt – Starter OC $16,000
This optional claiming $16,000 race has a lot of talent. What it’s missing is a ton of speed. That’s what makes 2/1 chalk Blue Buff the play. The John Servis trained runner figures to track speedster Animal Trick and Well Defined before rolling past that pair in the stretch. Put the favorite on top.
Well Defined offers 8/1 Horse Racing Odds on the morning line. The Kathleen O’Connell trainee comes over from Tampa Bay. The 4-year-old gelding hasn’t raced well in a long time. But this is a major drop and only Animal Trick should show speed in the early going.
Closer Gray Beau has 4 third-place finishes from 14 races at this distance. Beau has finished third in its last couple of races, both at Gulfstream and both at this level. Third again is more than possible.
- Win: Blue Buff
- Place: Well Defined
- Show: Gray Beau
Race 9 – 5:07 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – Allowance OC $62,500
Rail horse Soldado figures to get all the attention. For good reason! The Todd Pletcher trained colt is 2-for-2 at the distance, can lead or stalk, and gets top jock Luis Saez. Luis will ensure Soldado doesn’t get into a speed duel. That’s bad news for the rest of this field.
Blandeen should get the perfect stalking trip right behind the speed. The Scott Becker runner may not be good enough to beat Soldado. Balandeen can catch the other speed in this race, though.
For third, it’s tough to look past Mihos. The James Jerkens charge won 2 of his first 3 lifetime races including the $100,000 Mucho Macho Man stakes. Mihos has yet to repeat that effort. Jerkens hopes that with blinkers, Mihos shows more early step. He’ll have to if he wants to keep up with these.
- Win: Soldado
- Place: Blandeen
- Show: Mihos
Race 10 – 5:38 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – Claiming $14,000
Underrated trainer Amador Sanchez saddles Devoted Kitten in the tenth at Gulfstream on Thursday. Sanchez wins 38% second after the claim. This horse drops from the $25K optional claiming level to this $16K straight claiming event. The last time Devoted Kitten ran at this level, the gelding won.
No doubt, 8/5 chalk Peacock Kitten Horse Racing Odds will be tough to beat. The Saffie Joseph runner gets class relief after running in a $35,000 starter allowance in his last. But that race happened way back on January 2. Peacock could be vulnerable for the win.
Belgrano has an okay record at Gulfstream Park. The 6-year-old gelding sired by War Front has a win and 2 seconds from 8 races over the turf. Although Belgrano shouldn’t challenge Devoted Kitten or Peacock Kitten, this race lacks talent after those two runners. Jockey Edgar Prado rides, which is always a plus.
- Win: Devoted Kitten
- Place: Peacock Kitten
- Show: Belgrano
