Before finishing second at the Kentucky Derby, Lookin at Lee was wildly inconsistent in finishing third in two races and sixth in another in his three starts prior to the derby.
However, Lookin at Lee blew away the field (except Always Dreaming) at the Kentucky Derby and I believe he’s got an even better chance of winning at the shorter track at Pimlico. More importantly, Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen believes Lookin at Lee will have realistic chance after his performance in Kentucky.
“I’m so very proud of Lee,” Asmussen said. “That’s just who he is. He just did what he always does, the way he performed out there today.
Asmusssen added that Lookin at Lee is ‘looking good’ right now at Pimlico as he prepares for this weekend’s race.
“Lookin At Lee has always had a good rhythm to his training. This is a typical breeze for him. His personality and gamesmanship gave us a lot of confidence in him going into the Derby. We have no control of how the other horses run but we always feel like he does his best. It takes a horse like him to get the dream trip as he did in the Derby. Some of the spots that he went through aren’t for everybody and that’s what has us feeling so strongly about him going into the Preakness.”
Again, Asmussen, who is still chasing a Triple Crown win really believe hiss thoroughbred has a legit chance to win the Preakness.
“He’s the first horse in 20 years to run in the top three in the Derby from the 1 hole. All the variables you worry about in a horse going in here, I don’t worry about with Lee. He’s shown up every time. He earns your respect by overcoming, not making excuses.”
Lookin at Lee will be ridden by jockey Corey Lanerie at the 2017 Preakness.
“I have to give a lot of credit to Corey,” said Asmussen. “He and Lee have a lot of the same qualities. They just keep coming. Corey gave him a great shot. And when he cut the corner there at the head of the stretch, for a moment you thought you had a real shot. But the winner really stayed on well. In fact, I thought both horses really finished up well under these conditions.”
