If you were lucky enough to bet Bob Baffert trained Citizen Bull in the Derby Futures at 14-1, good for you.
Awesome job because the latest Derby Futures Pool shows Citizen Bull at 6-1.
The massive drops in odds came after many contenders blew it in the Grade 2 Risen Star at the Fair Grounds in the New Orleans this past weekend.

Writer’s Picks for the Race Lines for Kentucky Derby Horses
Citizen Bull a clear lone favorite other than the all other three year olds bet
The other three year olds bet is the 9-2 favorite.
The reason is because it takes a lot to get a horse to the Kentucky Derby starting gate.
Then the pony must deal with 19 other aspiring colts.
So the fact that Citizen Bull went from a 14-1 to 6-1 choice is amazing.
Most believe the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner is the class of this year’s three year old crop.
But at 6-1, it might be worth staying away from Baffert’s Bull.
The odds are awfully low on a colt that must find a way to stay healthy all the way to the First Saturday in May.
There other much better options.

Magnitude Makes the List after a Stunning Risen Star Win
Steve Asmussen has never won the Kentucky Derby.
He’s won the Preakness but never the Derby.
He didn’t even with Gun Runner, which finished third behind Nyquist and Exaggerator.
Magnitude’s victory in the Risen Star at an incredible 43-1 wasn’t luck.
Asmussen pushed all the right buttons.
The horse romped after opening up in the stretch.
What makes the win so impressive and the reason Magnitude is second on my list this week is because of the fractions.
Magnitude ran 6 furlongs in 1:10 and then dominated, which means the colt didn’t get away with soft fractions.
Kentucky Derby Pick: Magnitude 9-2
East Avenue is Going in the Wrong Direction
The 4-5 Risen Star favorite fell apart.
Not only did East Avenue not manage to challenge Magnitude after running second for most of the race but the highly touted chalk fell back to finish tenth.
Unless East Avenue came up with an injury, and nobody has said a thing, the performance is a sign that the horse doesn’t want to run anymore.
They might as well retire the colt because he had everything go his way and still managed to run a terrible, awful, horrendous race.
Sometimes, we forget that horses are living creatures.
Those living creatures give up the same way that humans do.
East Avenue either got spooked by Magnitude, meaning the Asmussen trainee scared the bejesus out of him, or wants to change careers.
Kentucky Derby Pick: East Avenue
Give Captain Cook a Real Look Because the Colt Hails from the Richard Dutrow Jr. Barn
Captain Cook looked good winning the Withers, a non-graded Wood Memorial prep, as the 7-5 chalk but the real reason to give Captain Cook a look is because the horse runs out of the Richad Dutrow Jr. barn.
Dutrow Jr. is one of the best trainers on the planet.
How good is RDJ? After sitting on the bench for a decade due to cheating, came back and started winning races right away.
He doesn’t need stuff to get his horses ready.
Captain Cook will improve.

First Resort Set to Make 2025 Debut in John Battaglia Memorial
Godolphin owned and bred First Resort won the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club this past November.
Since then, the Uncle Mo sired runner from a Street Boss broodmare has sat on the bench.
On Saturday, First Resort heads back to the track.
At the current 40-1 odds, First Resort is a great play to win the Derby if you believe the Eoin Harty trained colt improves.
If not, wait for First Resort to lose in the John Battaglia and then consider a bet after the odds drift even higher.
The John Battaglia Memorial takes place over an artificial surface.
So there’s no telling if First Resort will like the bounce in the track.
In any case, the Godolphin campaigned three year old has the breeding to win the Roses.
So give a look and decide if First Resort worth a bet.
Kentucky Derby Pick: First Resort 40-1

How to Read Betting Odds for Kentucky Derby? Let’s Find Out
Reading betting odds for the Kentucky Derby is crucial to making informed decisions when placing your wagers. Understanding how odds work will help you evaluate the potential payout and make smart bets on your favorite horses.
Here’s a simple guide on how to read betting odds for the Kentucky Derby:
1. Types of Betting Odds:
In the Kentucky Derby, you’ll typically see odds presented in one of three formats:
Fractional Odds (most common in the U.S.)
Decimal Odds
Moneyline Odds (rare in horse racing but sometimes used)
We’ll focus on fractional odds, as they are the most common for the Kentucky Derby.
2. Understanding Fractional Odds:
Fractional odds are displayed as a fraction (e.g., 5/1, 10/1, 15/2). The number on the left represents how much you’ll win if you bet the amount on the right.
Example:
5/1 odds means that for every $1 you bet, you will win $5 in profit if the horse wins.
If you bet $10 at 5/1 odds, you would win $50 (your profit), plus your $10 wager back, for a total of $60.
Here’s a breakdown of what different fractional odds mean:
- 1/1 (Even Money):
For every $1 you bet, you win $1. - 2/1:
For every $1 you bet, you win $2 in profit. - 5/2:
For every $2 you bet, you win $5 in profit. - 10/1:
For every $1 you bet, you win $10 in profit.
3. How to Calculate Payouts:
To calculate the potential payout from a Kentucky Derby bet, you can use the following formula:
Payout = (Bet Amount) × (Odds) + Bet Amount
For example:
If you bet $20 on a horse with 5/1 odds:
Payout = $20 × 5 + $20 = $120 (including your stake).
This shows how much you could win if that horse crosses the finish line first.
4. The Favorite vs. The Longshot:
- Favorites:
Horses with lower odds (e.g., 2/1, 3/1) are considered the favorites to win the race. These horses are expected to perform well and are seen as more likely to win, but they offer smaller payouts. - Longshots:
Horses with higher odds (e.g., 20/1, 30/1) are longshots—less likely to win, but if they do, the payout is much higher due to the greater risk.
5. Understanding “Morning Line” Odds:
Morning Line Odds are the odds that bookmakers set before the race begins, based on how likely they think each horse is to win. These odds can change as more money is placed on different horses (this is known as live odds).
If the odds for a horse change significantly before the race, it may indicate that more bettors are backing that horse.
6. Betting on the Kentucky Derby:
When betting on the Kentucky Derby, you may choose from several bet types:
- Win:
Bet on a horse to win the race outright. - Place:
Bet on a horse to finish first or second. - Show:
Bet on a horse to finish in the top 3 (1st, 2nd, or 3rd). - Exotics:
Bet on combinations of horses to finish in specific positions (e.g., Exacta, Trifecta, and Superfecta).
7. Odds Change Based on Betting Activity:
As bets are placed, odds can fluctuate. If a lot of money is placed on a particular horse, its odds will shorten (decrease) because the bookmaker believes the horse is more likely to win. If fewer people are betting on a horse, its odds will lengthen (increase).
Example of How Odds Work in the Kentucky Derby:
- Horse A:
5/1 odds – If you bet $10 on Horse A, you’ll win $50 in profit if Horse A wins. - Horse B:
2/1 odds – If you bet $10 on Horse B, you’ll win $20 in profit if Horse B wins. - Horse C:
20/1 odds – If you bet $10 on Horse C, you’ll win $200 in profit if Horse C wins.
