Tampa Bay Downs Picks for Wednesday, May 20

Race 4 – 2:30 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $16,000 Maiden Claiming

Ron Potts wins just 6% with horses going second-time for him. But Palaces Diamond ran well enough for Ron in her first race to garner top honors here. This maiden claiming field lacks a stand out runner. Diamond has a shot to help Potts raise that percentage.

Rattlesnake Bridge sired La Wapa may have finally figured things out. The 3-year-old filly put together her best race in her fifth try. Anymore improvement could see La Wapa in the winner’s circle. Consider her a co-top choice along with Palaces Diamond.

Donachitu’s works won’t inspire a ton of confidence. She offers 6/1 on the morning line, though. Not only that but trainer Gerald Bennett wins 15% with his first-time starters and 21% maiden claiming races. Take this daughter of Chitu seriously.

  • Win: Palaces Diamond
  • Place: La Wapa
  • Show: Donachitu

Race 5 – 3:00 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Dirt –$8,000 Claiming

Relishment takes a massive drop in class. The Gerald Bennett trained 4-year-old gelding finished fourth in a $25,000 claimer in its last. The Awesome Again sired runner finished second in a $16,000 claimer two races back. Relishment should roll.

Dale Bennett trained Yei Yei could go gate-to-wire. The 9/2 morning line equine ran a 21.3 quarter and 45.4 half. Yei couldn’t hang after fractions like that. If jockey Raul Mena rations some of Yei Yei’s early speed, expect a tussle with Relishment for the win.

Awesome Romeo closed great in its last to get the place money. The Robert Bordis trainee won’t get similar speed to chase. But Yei Yei and Relishment look better for the top 2 spots.

  • Win: Relishment
  • Place: Yei Yei
  • Show: Awesome Romeo

Race 8 – 4:30 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $75,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

10/1 on the morning line Baby Boomer has a real chance on Wednesday. The 3-year-old gelding sired by Khozan broke its maiden at first asking. It then finished second in a $75,000 optional claimer going 5 furlongs on the turf. Dirt should be Baby Boomer’s preferred surface. The lightly raced colt can press or go for the lead.

Michael Campbell wins 25% with horses going route to sprint. That’s the setup for Sky Mischief, a $240,000 Keeneland September Sale purchase. The 3-year-old colt bombed in its first against winners. That race was over the turf and at a mile. Expect the Into Mischief sired runner to bounce back with a huge performance on Wednesday.

The chalk in Wednesday’s feature is 2/1 Zaino Boys. Trained by Robert Raymond, Zaino won at this distance and at this level on March 14. Raymond wins just 4% with his first-time claimers, though. We’ll use on the bottom of exotics but that’s it.

  • Win: Baby Boomer
  • Place: Sky Mischief
  • Show: Zaino Boys
