If you were hoping for a close battle for the MotoGP World Championship this season, then your wishes are coming true. There are 6 races remaining in the 2023 season, with the top 2 racers separated by just 3 points. Yes, it is essentially a 2-horse race at this point, unless one of the other racers can get on a tear through the final weeks of the season, but it’s one that is promising to be more than a little fun to watch. The next race up on the schedule comes this weekend, with MotoGP heading to Indonesia.

Francesco Bagnaia

We tend to forget that the season is long and that winning a championship means staying consistent from start to finish. Bagnaia, who is looking for his 2nd straight World Championship, has done a pretty solid job of staying consistent, but he has had some issues over the last few races, missing one and failing to finish in another. In between those races, he has had 2 more where he landed on the podium but failed to win. It is all of that which has led to his lead being cut to just 3 points. He’ll be looking to get back on track this weekend, but he did finish 15th in this race last season, so another showing like that, and the lead will be gone.

Jorge Martin

For most of the season, Martin did enough to hang around among the leaders without ever really looking as though he was ready to mount a serious challenge. That all changed over the last 3 races, where he picked up a pair of wins and a 2nd place finish. He is getting hot at just the right time, although you do have to wonder if he can maintain this pace or if he is going to slip back to his results from earlier in the season. We might well get a partial answer to that this weekend. Tough to know what he might do on this track, as he was forced to retire in Indonesia last season.

Marco Bezzecchi

While we believe that the season has turned into a 2-horse race, Bezzecchi would almost certainly argue that point. He heads to Indonesia sitting on 265 points, which leaves him 59 points out of the lead. With 6 races to come, it is not an insurmountable lead, but he is going to need to be damn near perfect the rest of the way if he is to move from 3rd to 1st and the World Championship. His performance in Indonesia last year was forgettable, but he is much stronger in 2023.

Brad Binder

The harsh reality of this sport is that you cannot really expect to win a World Championship if you are regularly winning races. That is where Binder finds himself at the moment, as he is still looking for his first win of the season. There have been some podiums along the way, but not enough to stay in touch with the racers at the top of the standings. He had an 8th place finish in Indonesia last season, so I might be tempted to take him for a top 5 finish this weekend.
