When you think of college sports, the reality is that you tend to think of football and basketball.
While there are plenty of collegiate athletes doing their thing in other sports, it’s more than fair to suggest that football and basketball are the big two.
My Analysis
With that in mind, teams tend to be much better at one than the other, with very few excelling in both sports.
For example, Georgia is one of the top teams in college football, but they are not as impressive on the hard court.
On the flip side, the Kansas Jayhawks put more stock in basketball than football, but could they be on the rise on the field?
Last season suggests they might be making a move in football, but will that carry on over into the 2024 season?
Let’s take a look at the Kansas Football and their odds for the upcoming season.

Kansas Jayhawks Regular Season, Conference, and Win Total
When a team lands a new head coach in college football, you can reasonably expect them to require 2–3 years to recruit and build the team that they want.
Lance Lepold took over the Jayhawks in 2021 after the team went 0-9 in the 2020 season. He won 2 games in year one, followed by 6 a year later.
Last season, he led Kansas to a 9-win season, including a win in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. The question now is whether they have set the bar as high as possible.
The bookies seem to think so, as they have the Jayhawks win total set at 8 ½ for the 2024 season.
The key to success for the Kansas Jayhawks this season might well be the health of QB Jalon Daniels, who has had back issues basically from day one.
He has been seen taking plenty of reps in practice, but the coaching staff in Kansas has admitted that they might well be looking at load management in order to ensure that Daniels stays healthy all season long.
He certainly has plenty of weapons to work with when he does play, as well as a great running back in Devin Neal, who will likely end his college career as the leading rusher in Jayhawks history. The O-Line needs to do all they can to protect their star QB.
Where things get a little tricky for Kansas is on the defensive side of the football.
This unit was solid in the 2023 season, but they lost 3 starters to the NFL Draft and will be hoping that the replacements can come in and effectively fill those holes.
Despite a solid season in 2023, the Jayhawks went just 5-4 in the Big 12, so they will need to improve on that in a revamped conference. For now, they are listed at odds of +970 to win the Big 12.

Kansas Jayhawks Postseason Odds
Getting out of the conference is going to be a challenge for this team, even with Texas and Oklahoma now out of the picture and off to the SEC.
I think they are potentially looking at a similar win total as last season, which will not be enough to get them into the 12-team playoffs.
The bookies tend to agree, as they have the Jayhawks listed at +20000 to win the National Championship.

2023 Kansas Jayhawks Guide
It’s always going to be tough for Kansas to have a good football team year after year because it’s clearly a basketball school first and foremost and always will be. However, Coach Lance Leipold does appear to have KU on the right track.
Let’s break down Kansas Jayhawks this year. Here’s the preview for your college football betting odds to win the NCAA National Championship.

School: Kansas University

Kansas Jayhawks’ Season
Kansas got off to a stunning 5-0 start last season and Leipold was being hailed as a Coach of the Year candidate. The 5-0 start was the Jayhawks’ best start to the season since 2009 and it marked just the second time in the last 14 years they’re 2-0 to begin Big 12 Conference play. For the first time, Lawrence was the site of ESPN’s College Gameday on Oct. 8, 2022 as the Jayhawks hosted TCU.
Alas, reality and injuries set in and the team finished 6-7 but at least reached a bowl game for the first time since 2008, losing 55-53 in triple overtime against Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl.
The 108 combined points scored between Kansas and Arkansas set a new Liberty Bowl record, which was previously 84 between Louisville (44) vs. Boise State (40) in 2004. Kansas QB Jalon Daniels, who is back this year, finished 37-for-55 passing for 544 yards and moved into 10th on KU’s career passing yardage list with 3,592 career yards. Daniels passed Jordan Webb, who threw for 3,079 yards as a Jayhawk from 2010-11.
Kansas QB Jalon Daniels is Back
Daniels’ 544 passing yards mark a new career high, surpassing his previous career-high of 324 yards set against Duke last season. The yardage also was a school record, surpassing the previous best of 498 by Todd Reesing vs. Missouri on November 28th, 2009. Daniels was the first quarterback in FBS last season with 500+ passing yards and five passing touchdowns in a game. Additionally, Daniels set a new Kansas bowl record with 565 yards of total offense.
Daniels now has 26 career passing touchdowns, which is the sixth most in school history, surpassing Chip Hilleary, who had 25 between 1989-92. Daniels’ 18 passing touchdowns tied for the fifth-most in a single season. Overall, he threw for 2,014 yards and 18 touchdowns while completing 66.1% of his passes. He also added 77 rushes for 419 yards and seven scores on the ground despite missing a few games injured.
When he’s right, Daniels can carry the team. Leading rusher Devin Neal also returns. Kansas brings back more offensive production than any team in college football, the result of not only bringing back 10 offensive starters but also most of the primary backups from a team that averaged 438.6 yards and 35.6 points per game.
Kansas Jayhawks’ Defense
The defense has to do more this year. That unit allowed 30 points or more nine times and fell off the map late last year finishing last in the Big 12 and 126th in the nation giving up 459 yards per game. All-Big 12 cornerback Cobee Bryant leads the returning starters. He led the Jayhawks with three interceptions for 86 return yards last year, including a game-clinching touchdown at West Virginia on Sept. 10. Bryant also had the sixth-most passes defended in the Big 12, along with a career-high 34 tackles and a forced fumble on the season. Bryant added a blocked field goal return for a touchdown in Kansas’ season-opener against Tennessee Tech. Bowling Green linebacker transfer JB Brown and LSU transfer cornerback Damarius McGhee can only help.
Kansas this offseason went out to try and improve what was one of the nation’s worst special teams groups, bringing in multiple kickers — Seth Keller is the favorite to win the kicking battle — and Australian punter in Damon Greaves.
Kansas 2023 Season Prediction
Kansas will win its season opener at home vs. FCS school Missouri State on Friday, Sept. 1, but has a tough Week 2 game vs. Illinois on Friday, Sept. 8 – KU’s first weekday home game on ESPN since 1995 — and then also Week 3 at Nevada before opening Big 12 play at home against new league member BYU. KU also pays new league members UCF and Cincinnati but not Houston. The Jayhawks don’t have two road games in a row and five of the league games are at home.
