Excel Esports vs Astralis
- When: Saturday, July 31st – 18:00 CEST
Excel Esports and Astralis are two main competitors for the sixth and final ticket leading into the LEC 2021 Summer playoffs. These two teams are tied at 6-9 ahead of the final week of the regular season, meaning a win for either team could potentially deny the other a spot in the postseason.
Astralis enter the final week of the season following a solid victory against Schalke 04 on Saturday, having previously lost to MAD Lions, Rogue, and Fnatic. On the other side, Excel Esports won both of their last two outings against Team Vitality and Schalke 04 but struggled to deliver during Week 6, when they lost against Misfits Gaming and SK Gaming.
Astralis met with Excel way back in June when they secured a fairly comfortable win; however, we wouldn’t put too much weight on that result. Not only was the game played in the opening week of the season, but Excel Esports have also made several roster changes and have since looked much better.
Neither team is very good, nor are they consistent enough to say that one is better than the other. Excel might have slightly better individual talent, whereas Astralis should have an edge with their drafting.
You could make a case for Excel as the better-coached team, but that isn’t something that you would be able to tell from watching them play. Excel should win, but the strong form Astralis have been showing and the ability to gain edged with drafts make the Danish esports organization a better pick for this match.
Prediction: Astralis to win
MAD Lions vs Fnatic
- When: Saturday, July 31st – 21:00 CEST
The day will end with a true spectacle, as the reigning champions, MAD Lions, clash with the most improved LEC team of the season, Fnatic. This match will not only prove how well prepared the two tournament favorites are ahead of the playoffs, but it could also have serious implications on how the seeding for the season-culminating event will look like.
MAD Lions enter the final week of the regular season following a massive upset victory against Rogue on Saturday, which marked their third consecutive win of the summer season. Interestingly, it was Rogue who won against Fnatic just a day prior, ending their five-game winning streak.
If you looked only at these teams’ recent results, it would be easy to suggest that MAD Lions are the better team since they won against a side that defeated Fnatic. But things don’t work like that.
Fnatic lost against Rogue due to some silly early-game errors, which cost them valuable resources and time from which they weren’t able to recover. On the other side, MAD Lions won against Rogue purely of having a better team composition.
It’s also worth noting that MAD Lions were in a losing position for most of the early game that day yet managed to outscale Rogue – who continue to struggle with closing out their games. It’s a big problem Rogue need to address, but that’s a story for another day.
Fnatic have been more impressive throughout the season, which is why we like them better here. At the same time, it’s worth keeping in mind that MAD Lions have the talent to defeat anyone; however, they lack the consistency to show that regularly.
This match will come down to whether MAD Lions can show their good side, but since that isn’t guaranteed, we have to bite the bullet and side with Fnatic.
Prediction: Fnatic to win
