Why Bet on LSU?

No. 13 LSU (15-2) was upset at home by Arkansas 65-58 on Saturday. The Hogs closed the game on a 17-2 run. LSU had built a 56-48 lead with 9:01 on a Tari Eason dunk off an Alex Fudge steal.

Eric Gaines led LSU with 14 points with four assists and four steals. Fudge had one of his best games off the bench with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting and two treys, while Eason had 13 points and three steals. LSU shot just 38.2 percent for the game (21-of-55) and 8-of-25 in the second half. Arkansas finished at 41-8 percent (23-of-55).

It was the first time LSU lost when holding a team under 70 points and the loss ended LSU’s 13-game winning streak at home. The Tigers forced 19 turnovers and recorded 14 steals while LSU had 16 turnovers. But Arkansas had the advantage in points off turnovers, 20-13, and 30-28 in points in the paint.

LSU will be looking to pick up some of the offensive numbers as it is averaging just 64.2 points a game in SEC play. For the season, Eason continues to lead the Tigers in scoring at 15.4 points a game (13.4 in league play), while Darius Days is second at 14.0 (11.6 in SEC).

LSU is first in the NCAA stats in field goal percentage defense at 35.4%; first in the nation in steals per game (12.2) first in the nation in total steals (207), fourth in three-point field goal defense (26.4), fifth in scoring defense (57.0) and sixth in turnovers forced (18.71).

Guard Xavier Pinson will be a game-time call for this one. He has missed the past two with a sprained knee and bone bruise. Pinson ranks third on the team in scoring at 10.9 points a game. He also leads the team with 4.6 assists and is second with 2.1 steals per game. If Pinson can’t play, sophomore Eric Gaines will make his third consecutive start.

Why Bet on Alabama?

The Tide (11-6) lost 78-76 at Mississippi State on Saturday. The contest featured 19 lead changes and 15 ties but it was Bama’s third consecutive loss, matching the longest losing streak under head coach Nate Oats.

Four UA players reached double figures led by guard Jaden Shackelford’s 17 points on the night. Forward Darius Miles came off the bench to collect a career-best 14 points to go with six rebounds, while guar Keon Ellis also had 14 and a team-leading seven boards. Center Charles Bediako added 11, six rebounds and a pair of assists in the loss. Guard Jahvon Quinerly finished with five points which snapped his nine-game double-figure scoring streak.

The Tide are now 1-2 in one possession games and 3-3 in two possession contests this season. A year ago, UA finished 3-2 in one possession games and went 4-1 in games that game down to two possessions.

Alabama is the only team in the country to have two wins versus teams ranked in the top five of the NCAA NET rankings (No. 1 Gonzaga and No. 4 Houston). The Tide also owns a 3-1 record vs. teams ranked in the AP Top 25 this season, with all three victories coming against top-15 ranked squads.

The Tide enter this game ranked No. 2 in the SEC and No. 14 in the nation in scoring offense at 82.1 points per game. UA also leads the league in threes attempted (500), threes made (159) and threes made per game (9.4).

A year ago, the Tide won all three games over the Tigers and have now won four straight overall in the series, including an 80-79 win in the SEC Tournament championship game. With the season series sweep, UA improved to 112-74 overall in the 186 games played between the rivals. The 186 meetings are the second-most Alabama has played against any single opponent, while the 112 wins rank as third best against any foe.
