2017 MLB Expert Predictions For Colorado At Philadelphia

Written by on May 24, 2017

Teams in the MLB seem to be sorted into three main categories: legitimate World Series contenders, potential dark horses, and teams that are in a rebuilding phase. Unfortunately, some baseball fans seem to be stuck with a team that is in a perpetual rebuilding state, which is what appears to be the case in Philadelphia. It wasn’t so very long ago that the Phillies were a team to be reckoned with, but those days now seem long gone, as they have had progressively worsening seasons for quite some time now.

The Colorado Rockies have also not been particularly great over the past few seasons, but you always got the sense that they were just a couple of pieces away from moving on up into dark horse territory. They made those moves this past postseason, and they appear to be working for them in the early going of the season. The Rockies and Phillies will close out a 4-game series in Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon.

Why bet on the Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies (30-17) have been totally dominant through the first two games of this series, outscoring the Phillies 16-3. The Rockies have now won 3 straight, as well as 7 of their last 10 games, and are now in possession of a 2-game lead in the NL West. The difference between this Rockies team and those of the past few years is that they finally have some defense to go with all that offensive power. Colorado are the second highest scoring team in the league right now, and while their pitching is sitting in the middle of the pack, it’s still a vast improvement on what it has been in years past. Tyler Anderson (3-4, 6.00 ERA) will start for the Rockies.

Why bet on the Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies (15-28) are on a slide that has seen them fall all the way to the cellar in the NL East. Outside of the Washington Nationals, this is not a particularly competitive division, which is why it must be even more frustrating for the Phillies fans to see their team struggle so badly. The Phillies have lost 4 in a row, including back to back games versus the Rockies, and have only managed a pair of wins in their last 10 games. Their pitching is a bit of a nightmare, and that staff has been brutally punished by Colorado in the last two games. Vince Velasquez (2-4, 5.98 ERA) will be on the mound for the Phillies in the Thursday matinee.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

This is not exactly a great pitching match-up, so I would not be surprised to see this game go the route of the OVER. As far as a straight up win goes, my money would once again be on the Rockies.
