Why Bet on Houston?
The Astros continue to comfortably lead the AL West and are heavy favorites to win it a third year in a row. They enter on a three-game winning streak, sweeping visiting Seattle on Sunday 6-1.
Houston will lose the designated hitter for this game. Thus, manager A.J. Hinch said that good-looking young hitter Yordan Alvarez is unlikely to start either of the Astros’ games at Coors Field. Without the benefit of a designated hitter in a National League park, and also nursing a knee injury, there’s no real path to get Alvarez into the lineup. He could pinch-hit. Altuve socked three singles, including a two-out, RBI knock to boost the Astros’ lead to five runs in the eighth inning. It was his third three-hit performance of the season. The 29-year-old infielder has been plagued by injuries this season, but he’s hitting .292 (14-for-48) with one homer and three RBI in 11 games since coming off the injured list earlier this month.
Houston will call up Jose Urquidy to start Tuesday’s game. This start will be Urquidy’s first at the major league level. He owns a 3.40 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 105/15 K/BB ratio across 76 2/3 frames split between Double- and Triple-A this season. MLB.com ranks the 24-year-old right-hander as the organization’s No. 29 prospect.
The Mexican righthander will need to be added to Houston’s 40-man roster, which is currently full. A corresponding move will be announced prior to Tuesday’s game. Urquidy, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016, burst onto the Astros radar this season after experiencing a velocity spike. He was the opening day starter at Double-A Corpus Christi. After eight appearances, he garnered a promotion to Triple-A Round Rock. He fills a spot vacated by Brad Peacock, who went on the injured list with right shoulder discomfort he’d been pitching through for one month.
“It’s hard to hand someone their major league debut at Coors Field,” general manager Jeff Luhnow said Monday. “It’s a difficult assignment for anybody, whether they’re debuting or not. Jose has performed well this year, he did well in spring training for us and has performed well in the (Pacific Coast League).”

All-Star Charlie Blackmon went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBI, a walk and a pair of runs scored Sunday. Blackmon took Dodgers reliever Yimi Garcia deep with two outs in the ninth inning. It was his second consecutive game with a home run and his 20th round-tripper of the season. The 32-year-old veteran outfielder has a realistic shot at eclipsing the career-high 37 homers he mashed back in 2017. Blackmon owns a.337/.383/.653 triple-slash line with 65 runs scored, 56 RBI and two stolen bases across 321 plate appearances.
Third baseman Nolan Arenado and shortstop Trevor Story also were named All-Stars. Story was placed on the injured list on June 20 with a right thumb sprain but is expected to be activated Tuesday. Over the weekend, Story appeared in two games for Triple-A Albuquerque to make sure the thumb is healed. He went 1-for-3 in both.
It’s German Marquez on the mound. Marquez (8-3) picked up the win in Wednesday’s 6-3 victory over the Giants, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks over five innings while striking out two. A high pitch count kept Marquez from a quality start — he needed 98 pitches (64 strikes) to record his 15 outs — but he still notched his fifth win in his last six decisions. The right-hander will take a 4.29 ERA and 113:26 K:BB through 115.1 innings into this one.
Marquez makes his second career start vs. Houston. He beat the Astros 5-1 in 2018 at Minute Maid Park, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts across seven innings.
