A’s left Brett Anderson (10-8) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over six innings Sunday, striking out two batters in a loss to the Giants. He did not factor into the decision. Anderson has been pretty mediocre in August, giving up 11 runs over 23 innings (4.30 ERA) with a 12:8 K:BB. He allowed a pair of runs in the second inning before Evan Longoria took him deep for a solo blast in the third, but he managed to settle in after that.
Anderson is 0-6 with a 6.86 ERA (40.2 ip, 60 h, 35 r, 31 er, 11 bb, 30 so, 7 hr) in eight career starts against New York. The losses are his most against any team and the ERA is his highest against any team that he has faced more than three times. Anderson was the losing pitcher in his only start last year, a 6-2 A’s loss at Yankee Stadium on May 13 (5.0 ip, 8 h, 4 r, 4 er, 2 bb, 4 so).
Oakland swept the Yankees three games earlier this month and is 10-3 in the past 13 matchups in the series (since 6/15/17) and 27-15 (.357) vs. New York since the start of 2013, the Yankees’ worst record vs. any AL club in that span.

DJ LeMahieu went 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored Wednesday. The Yankees now have 70 homers in the month of August, by far an MLB record. LaMahieu has driven in 89 runs in his first season with the Yankees. Those numbers along with a .332 average make LeMahieu a legitimate MVP candidate in 2019.
Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge also went deep. Judge is red-hot with the bat right now, and he’s now homered six time in his last nine games. He also owns a .277/.388/.512 line, and he’s driven in 42 runs in 78 games. Third baseman Gio Urshela left Wednesday’s contest with left groin tightness. Urshela exited the contest early with Didi Gregorius taking his place in the lineup. It’s not clear yet if Urshela will play Friday.
The Yankees are expected to activate first baseman Luke Voit on Friday. Voit (sports hernia) has been playing with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since last Friday.
Yankees lefty CC Sabathia (5-8) took the decision in a 2-1 loss to the Dodgers on Saturday, pitching four innings and giving up two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven. Sabathia was able to keep the Dodgers off the board except for a two-run homer by Justin Turner in the third inning, but he still has not completed five innings since July 16. The left-hander avoided major damage though, and he helped his cause by striking out seven of the 18 batters he faced. Sabathia will take a 4.99 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 94:34 K:BB into his next start Friday.
