Top Expert MLB Betting Picks of Week – September 3rd

Written by on September 3, 2018

Who’s going to come out on top in the three-way race for first place in the NL West? Can the Oakland A’s catch the Houston Astros in the AL West? Are the Boston Red Sox set to coll off over the final month of regular season action after looking like they were going to challenge for the all-time record for wins in a season just a few weeks ago? If you’ve got questions, then I’ve got answers that I’m going to reveal in this week’s MLB betting picks of the Week!

Top Expert MLB Betting Picks of the Week – September 3rd

Boston Red Sox (99-44) at Atlanta Braves (76-60)

  • When: Tuesday, September 4, 7:35 PM ET
  • Where: SunTrust Park, Cumberland, Georgia
29-year-old Boston right-hander Rick Porcello might look like he’s having a fine season with a 15-7 record and respectable 4.27 ERA, but he’s struggled mightily recently. Porcello has given up at least four earned runs in two of his last three starts while allowing five or more in two of his last five starts. Over his last 10 starts, Porcello has been smacked around for at least seven earned runs twice while allowing four runs or more in half of those starts. 25-year-old Atlanta southpaw Sean Newcomb (11-7, 3.85 ERA) has also gotten pounded recently by allowing five earned runs or more in three of his last four starts. Newcomb was smacked around for six earned runs on eight hits – including two home runs – in an 8-5 loss to Tampa Bay last Wednesday.

MLB Betting Prediction

The Red Sox are 13-3 in their last 16 interleague road games and an insane 12-0 in Rick Porcello’s last 12 interleague starts. Conversely, the Braves are 3-7 in their last 10 home games. With Boston also going an incendiary 46-26 on the road this season and Atlanta being a modest 37-31 at home overall, I think the Red Sox are the easy pick to get the win and Run Line cover in Game 2 of their Interleague set against the Braves. Score Prediction: Red Sox 7 – Braves 3

New York Mets (61-75) at LA Dodgers (75-62)

When: Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, 5:35 PM ET Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA The Mets have won two straight to improve to 5-5 over their last 10 games, but the Dodgers have won three in a row to move to a blistering 8-2 over their last 10. New York left-hander Zack Wheeler (9-7, 3.37 ERA) has been absolutely lights-out in not allowing more than two earned runs in each of his last eight starts while leading the Mets to a stellar 8-2 record over his last 10 starts overall. Unfortunately, the Mets have managed to find a way to lose two of his last three starts despite the fact that Wheeler limited the opposition to just one run while tossing seven innings in each outing. L.A. right-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-1, 2.24 ERA) has been rock-solid in not allowing more than two earned runs in three of his last four starts, although it should be noted he’s given up at least one home run in three straight starts.

MLB Betting Prediction

The Dodgers are flying high right now after winning three straight games against Arizona by the identical score of 3-2 each time in what many observers are calling the best series of the season. New York has a losing road record (33-35) and Los Angeles is in a dogfight for the NL West division title. More importantly, L.A. ranks ninth in scoring (4.70 RPG) and a stellar second in team ERA (3.41) while the Mets are ranked 24th (4.13 RPG) and 18th (4.21 ERA) respectively. The focused Dodgers win a tight affair. Score Prediction: Dodgers 4 – Mets 2

Minnesota Twins (63-73) at Houston Astros (84-53)

  • When: Wednesday, Sept. 5, 8:10 PM ET
  • Where: Minute Maid Park, Houston, TX
Minnesota has dropped two straight to fall to an awful 3-7 over their last 10 games while Houston has won two in a row to improve to 7-3 over their last 10. The Twins are no MLB Betting favorites against the Astros. Twins right-hander Jake Odorizzi (5-9, 4.41 ERA) hasn’t been pitiful recently, but he’s also been nothing to write home about in giving up three runs or more in two of his last three starts. 24-year-old Framber Valdez (2-1, 1.26 ERA) makes his fourth start of the season for Houston after tossing an identical five innings in each of his last two starts and limiting the opposition to one earned runs in each outing.

MLB Betting Prediction

While Houston hasn’t set the place on fire at home this season (37-32) Minnesota has been borderline disgraceful in going 24-44 on the road. The Twins are just 17th in scoring (4.44 RPG) and a discouraging 23rd in team ERA (4.61) and that won’t be nearly good enough to keep up with a Houston team that ranks fourth in scoring (4.94 RPG) and first in team ERA (3.13) first in strikeouts and first in quality starts (86). This one will be an epic rout. Score Prediction: Houston 8 – Minnesota 1
