MLB Betting Preview: Arizona vs. LA Dodgers NLDS Game 1

Written by on October 5, 2017

The Wild Card games are officially in the books, which means it’s now time to turn our attention to the Division Series on both sides of the MLB Playoff bracket. We will be covering all the games in one way or another, starting off with Game 1 of the NLDS. The Arizona Diamondbacks were made to work for their spot here, as they had to crank out 11 runs in order to see off the Colorado Rockies in the NL Wild Card Game. They picked up that win on home soil, but will now need to pack their bags and head to Los Angeles for the first two games of this series, and our MLB Betting Preview includes everything you need to know to make the right pick. The Dodgers are the favorites to not only win this series, they are favorites in the National League  in the odds to win the World Series. That seemed like a foregone conclusion a month or so ago, but the Dodgers had a pretty forgettable run late in the season, which they are going to need to shake off as they head into this NLDS.

Why should the Arizona Diamondbacks be your MLB Betting Pick?

It proved to be a rather nervy affair for the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL Wild Card Game versus the Colorado Rockies. It looked as though it was going to be easy early on, as the D-Backs scored early and often, chasing the Rockies starting pitcher Jon Gray after just 4 outs. Arizona continued to allow Colorado back into the game, though, and eventually went on to win 11-8 in the type of slugfest that you don’t very often see in playoff baseball. This game once again proved that the Diamondbacks can score runs. They racked up 812 runs in the regular season, and their pitching was good enough to lead them to a +153 differential. The Diamondbacks finished a game over .500 on the road in the regular season, doing most of their good work at home. Arizona got the best of the Dodgers this season, beating them 11-8 and going 5-5 on the road. If they can steal one of the opening two games on the road, they will be in business.

Why should the Los Angeles Dodgers be your MLB Betting Pick?

As we mentioned earlier, the Dodgers went through a rough patch towards the end of the season, although they did manage to pull things together to go 8-2 in their last 10 games. The one thing that the Dodgers are going to need to avoid in this series is getting pulled into a shootout with the Diamondbacks, as that will be the fastest road to defeat. The Dodgers were well off the pace set by Arizona in runs scored in the regular season, but they are a much better defensive team with better pitching than their opponent. The Dodgers are the safest NLDS Betting Pick for Game 1. They will hand the ball to Clayton Kershaw (18-4, 2.31 ERA) to get this series started, and that usually means a win for the Dodgers. Kershaw took a pair of losses in October, but prior to that, you need to go back to May to find the last time that the Dodgers lost a game he started. LA had 57 wins at home in the regular season, and have turned Dodger Stadium into something of a fortress.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I think that the Diamondbacks are going to steal a win in LA, but I think it is more likely to come in Game 2. Clayton Kershaw will do his thing and get the Dodgers a win to get the NLDS started. Score: Arizona Diamondbacks 2 – Los Angeles Dodgers 4
