Status of the Series

It’s all tied at 1. The Brewers took the opener 6-5 at home on Friday thanks in part to a shocking home run by relief pitcher Brandon Woodruff off Dodgers ace and three-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw. Woodruff became just the third relief pitcher to homer in MLB postseason history. He was also the first left-handed hitting pitcher to ever homer off of a left-handed pitcher during a playoff game. Flame-throwing lefty Josh Hader played a pivotal role out of the Brewers’ bullpen in that win, allowing just two hits while striking out four over three scoreless innings.

Because Hader was used so long in Game 1, he wasn’t available for Game 2 and he was missed in Milwaukee’s 4-3 loss. It snapped a string of 12 consecutive victories for the Brewers dating back to September 23. Justin Turner smashed a go-ahead two-run homer off of Jeremy Jeffress in the eighth inning. After pushing a pair of runs across in the seventh inning to trim the deficit to one run, Chris Taylor led off the eighth with an infield single. Turner then turned on a 2-0 pitch and hit it into the seats in left field. Pitching in all five of the Brewers’ playoff games, Jeffress has been shaky in four.

Why Bet on Milwaukee?

The Brewers have gone 27-11 against NL West opponents this season, which includes 4-1 during the postseason against Colorado (3-0) and Los Angeles (1-0). The Brewers went 45-37 on the road during the regular season, going 15-8-4 in series play. Their .549 road winning percentage ranked fourth in the National League. Their 45 road wins marked the third most in franchise history (47-33-1 in 1982 and 46-34 in 1980). The team won its last 6 road series and last 5 road games.

The Brewers need more from Jeffress. After going 8-1 with a 1.29 earned run average, WHIP of 0.99 and 15 saves in a career-high 73 appearances in the regular season, Jeffress is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA and WHIP of 2.79 in 4 2/3 innings over five appearances. He’s allowed a team-high 11 hits, and opponents are hitting him at a .458 clip.

It’s Jhoulys Chacin (15-8, 3.50) to start here. The veteran right-hander was brilliant in his first career playoff start in Game 2 of the NLDS, beating the Rockies with five scoreless innings of three-hit baseball. It was his postseason debut. Chacin has gone 11-9 with a 4.41 ERA in 26 career games/25 starts against the Dodgers (145ip, 71er), including a 21-5 loss this season on 8/2 at Dodger Stadium (4.1ip, 5h, 9r, 8er, 4bb, 3k, 3hr, 1hbp). He is 5-5 with a 4.96 ERA in 12 career starts at Dodger Stadium (61.2ip, 34er).

Why Bet on LA Dodgers?

The Dodgers and Brewers split four games at Dodger Stadium from July 30-Aug. 2, with the Dodgers memorably winning the finale of the series, 21-5. L.A. also hit a season-high tying seven home runs in that contest (also June 24 at NYM).

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts announced Sunday that Yasmani Grandal will start behind the plate for Game 3 of the NLCS. Grandal had an awful Game 1 with a pair of errors and two passed balls in a losing effort. He then pinch-hit in Game 2 with the bases loaded and the Dodgers trailing by a run, where he grounded into a double play in which he slid feet-first into first base, which is like unheard of.

Brewers vs Dodgers Game 3 is scheduled for Monday Night.

L.A. starts rookie righty Walker Buehler (8-5, 2.62). Buehler tied a season high by allowing five runs to the Braves in NLDS Game 3, but the damage was in one bad inning when he walked three and allowed a grand slam to Ronald Acuna Jr. He gave up one run in seven frames against the Crew on July 31.

As a starter during the regular season, Buehler ranked among the best in the big leagues (min. 125 IP) in ERA (2.31, 5th), opponents’ batting average (.185, 3rd), opponents’ OBP (.249, 5th), opponents’ SLG (.282, 2nd), opponents’ OPS (.531, 2nd), WHIP (0.92, 5th), hits per nine innings (5.94, 3rd) and home runs per nine innings (0.73, 9th). He ranked among NL starters in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.08, 8th) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.90, 12th).

Buehler finished the season with the lowest WHIP (0.92) among rookie pitchers with 20 or more starts since 1913, and the second-lowest opponents’ OBP (.249), behind just Dick Hughes’ .248 mark in 1967 with the Cardinals. His .185 opponents’ batting average also ranked the fourth lowest, while his .531 opponents’ OPS was the fifth lowest.
