Dodgers at Phillies MLB Expert Pick – July 25th

Written by on July 25, 2018

It’s a potential playoff preview on Wednesday afternoon from the City of Brotherly Love as Dodgers at Phillies will be held at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies are slight dogs at our online sportsbook behind former Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta – who once threw a no-hitter vs. L.A. while with the Cubs.

Yankees vs Rays Wednesday Night MLB Odds & Preview

Why Bet on LA Dodgers?

The Dodgers already landed star third baseman/shortstop Manny Machado from Baltimore and could be close to getting former All-Star closer Zach Britton from the Birds. One rumor has L.A. sending outfielder Yasiel Puig to Baltimore for Britton in order to help the Dodgers offset salary. That’s because the Dodgers must stay under the luxury tax threshold. Britton is making $12 million this year while Puig has a $7.5 million salary for 2018. Puig is in the final year of his seven-year, $42 million contract, but he still has another year of team control remaining through arbitration. Top contenders like the Yankees and Astros are among the other teams involved in talks. Puig is currently out with an oblique injury but is expected back this weekend. On Monday, the Dodgers placed 3B Justin Turner on the 10-day disabled list with a right groin strain. The Dodgers didn’t handle this very well, as Turner didn’t make a start for a week and a half and then when he did return to the lineup Sunday left after three innings after aggravating his groin ailment. It’s unclear at this point how long he’ll be sidelined. Machado will play third every day with Turner out. Chris Taylor will slide back to short from second. Machado has been on fire as of late, as he has now reached base safely in his last 23 games since June 27, batting .369 (31-for-84) with 13 runs, six doubles, a triple, five home runs and 11 RBI. He has also drawn 12 walks against eight strikeouts, as he has posted a .448 OBP and a 1.091 OPS. It’s rookie Walker Buehler (4-2, 3.45) on the mound here. Late last month, the team sent him back to the minors after struggling in a relief appearance. But he’ll be called up from Triple-A for this one. It appears the Dodgers intend to break Buehler into a six-man rotation, at least for the upcoming week. The Dodgers could look to restrict Buehler’s pitch counts during his starts with the big club an effort to keep him fresh through a potential playoff run.

Why Bet on Philadelphia?

On Monday, the Phils optioned Aaron Altherr to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 27-year-old outfielder has been a major disappointment this season, slashing a ghastly .171/.290/.305 with six homers and 33 RBI in his 248 plate appearances. He’ll try to figure things out playing every day at Triple-A and should get another shot in Philadelphia before the end of the season. This will be the final-ever regular-season game in Philadelphia for the Dodgers’ Chase Utley, an all-time Phillie great. Utley announced prior to the All-Star break that he will retire following the season. Utley was a six-time All-Star (2006-10, ’14) with the Phillies and helped the Fightins’ win the World Series in 2008. In the 13 years with Philadelphia (2003-15), Utley ranks among the Phillies’ modern-era franchise leaders in games played (1551, 8th), hits (1,623, 9th), runs (949, 6th), doubles (346, 5th), home runs (233, 6th), RBI (916, 7th) and walks (625, 10th). Dodgers at Phillies will be a great opportunity for Jake Arrieta to show his skills. The Phillies have won six of their last eight games at home, eight of their last 11 and are 32-18 (.640) at CBP this season. They have the best home winning percentage in the NL (next: Cubs, .633), and fourth-best in baseball trailing only the Red Sox (.723), Yankees (.708) and Mariners (.647). Philadelphia’s 10.0 % walk rate leads the majors (next-closest: CHI, 9.9 %) and also rank 1st in pitches per plate appearance (4.02) and 4th in walks (377). It’s Jake Arrieta (7-6, 3.47) on the mound. Arrieta didn’t factor into the decision in Friday’s 11-5 win over the Padres, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks over 3.1 innings while striking out two. The right-hander threw 48 of 82 pitches for strikes as he spotted San Diego a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, and while the Philadelphia offense quickly erased the deficit, Arrieta couldn’t stick around long enough to collect the win.
