Giants vs Diamondbacks MLB Prediction – August 2

Written by on August 2, 2018

There are a lot of aces on the mound around baseball on Thursday, but clearly, the pitching matchup of the night is coming from Giants vs Diamondbacks as Snakes No. 1 Zack Greinke, a former Cy Young winner, takes on former Giants World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner. Needless to say, a low total on Mybookie Sportsbook and the D-Backs come in as the MLB odds favorites for this one.

Why Bet on San Francisco?

The Giants are trying to hang around the NL West and wild-card races at 55-54 and have won three straight – they had an unusual day off Wednesday after sweeping a quick two-game series in San Diego on Monday and Tuesday. It was only the Giants’ fourth sweep of the season. The team hadn’t swept anyone since brooming the Diamondbacks in a three-game set, June 29-July 1 at Chase Field. The Giants are 44-5 (.898) this season when leading after 6.0 innings. That’s the fifth-best record in the MLB. However, when tied or trailing through 6.0 innings, the Giants are just 10-49 (.169). Will Smith tallied his sixth save of the season Tuesday. Smith gave up a two-out single to Manuel Margot in the bottom of the 10th but promptly induced a game-ending groundout from Wil Myers. Smith boasts a 1.31 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and 48/7 K/BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings this season and has recently emerged as the Giants’ preferred option at closer. Andrew McCutchen hit a solo homer Tuesday. McCutchen drew trade interest from a couple of teams leading up to the non-waiver deadline, but the Giants ultimately decided to keep the veteran outfielder. He could be dealt before the August 31 waiver trade deadline. The former MVP is batting .258/.353/.413 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI in 105 games this season. It’s ace lefty Madison Bumgarner (3-4, 3.06) here. The four-time All-Star makes his 11th start of the season The Giants 4-6 in his outings this year, going 0-4 on the road. MadBum needs just one more win to match Tim Lincecum for the fourth-most in SF-era history. Bumgarner is 9-11 with a 2.60 ERA in 31 games (31 starts) against the Diamondbacks. He enters his outing having lost four in a row to Arizona, going 0-4 with a 2.67 ERA. Bumgarner has not earned a win over the Snakes since July 10, 2016.

Why Bet on Arizona?

The Snakes also were off Wednesday after splitting two home games with Texas to start this week. Paul Goldschmidt went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in the Diamondbacks’ win Tuesday. The perennial MVP candidate was mired in a horrific slump to begin the year but has hit a blistering .336 with 17 homers and 45 RBI since May 25. Arizona is 9-5 in its last 14 home games vs. San Francisco. Goldschmidt is hitting .419 (18-for-43) with 7 doubles, 3 home runs and 9 RBI vs. Giants this season. Arizona made two trades Tuesday to boost the bullpen. It landed RHP Brad Ziegler from the Marlins for RHP Tommy Eveld. Ziegler was dreadful over the first two months of the 2018 season and ultimately lost his closer gig to Kyle Barraclough, but the veteran reliever has rebounded in a huge way since early June, delivering a 0.64 ERA over his final 28 appearances in a Marlins uniform. Giants vs Diamondbacks is going to be a close one. Ziegler will operate in a setup role in Arizona. Also, the D’backs got LHP Jake Diekman from the Rangers for RHP Wei-Chieh Huang and a player to be named later. Diekman, 31, had registered a 3.69 ERA and 48/23 K/BB ratio in 39 innings this season with Texas. It’s Zack Greinke (12-5, 2.96) on the bump here. Greinke cruised to the win against the Padres on Friday, giving up just one earned run on six hits over seven innings and striking out six without walking a batter in Arizona’s 6-2 victory. Greinke is on a torrid pace at the moment, as he’s 9-1 over his last 11 starts, a span that has lowered his ERA from 3.44 to 2.96. Greinke ranks among the NL leaders in wins (T-2nd) and ERA (5th). He is 6-0 with a 1.16 ERA (6 ER in 46.2 IP), .202 opponents average, 48 strikeouts and 5 walks in his last 7 starts since June 23. The former Cy Young winner is 12-2 with a 2.31 ERA (30 ER in 117.0 IP) in 18 career starts vs. Giants.
