Why Bet on San Francisco?

Monitor the status of Giants All-Star catcher Buster Posey after he suffered a mild hamstring injury on Saturday and hadn’t played since entering Wednesday. Worked out well for the Giants in Tuesday’s 9-3 win over the Mets as backup Stephen Vogt hit a two-run double in the 10th inning to break a 3-3 tie. The 34-year-old has been serviceable in limited time backing up Posey this year, batting .268 with a .785 OPS.

Tuesday’s win was the 1000th in the Giants managing career of Bruce Bochy. The only other manager in team history to reach the 1,000 win plateau was John McGraw, who won 2,583 games with the New York Giants from 1902-1932. Bochy’s playing career began just a few hundred feet away at the Mets’ Shea Stadium when he caught his first MLB game as a member of the Astros on July 19, 1978. Bochy already has announced that the 2019 season will be his last at the helm of the Giants. The year marks Bochy’s 13th season with the Giants and his 25th season overall as a manager.

Over his last 13 appearances dating to April 29, lefty reliever Will Smith has posted a 1.38 ERA, converted each of his seven save opportunities, struck out 22, walked just two and held opposing hitters to a .111 clip. Smith has fanned 22-of-45 batters faced in that span (48.9%).

Giants rookie Shaun Anderson allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk across seven innings to earn a victory against the Orioles on Saturday. It took four starts, but the 24-year-old got his first major-league victory. He threw well in other outings, but this was the first time Anderson pitched past the fifth inning. While it’s still a small sample size, Anderson has gotten off to a decent start in his MLB career. He is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 13 strikeouts in 22 innings this season.

Anderson is set to make his first start against the Mets and former college teammate Pete Alonso, who played with Anderson at Florida.

Why Bet on NY Mets?

Should you bet on the Mets MLB odds for Thursday?

The Mets had been missing three regulars in second baseman Robinson Cano, third baseman Jed Lowrie and center fielder Brandon Nimmo. However, Cano was activated Wednesday. The veteran had been on the IL since May 23 because of a left quad strain. Lowrie has been out all season with a sprained knee and he recently suffered a setback when he strained his hamstring. It’s unclear when he’ll resume baseball activities. Nimmo was placed on the injured list May 22 with a bulging cervical disc and inflammation in his neck — injuries that have lingered since mid-April. He’s not close.

Pete Alonso leads all rookies in homers (20), RBI (45), hits (58), extra-base hits (34) and slugging (.618). Alonso has set a Mets rookie record with 20 home runs before the All-Star break. Ron Swoboda previously held the record with 15 homers in 1965. Alonso has eight home runs in his last 17 games. Has recorded three multi-homer games this year, one shy of Daryl Strawberry’s rookie record.

New York’s Zack Wheeler (5-3) struck out nine en route to the win in a 5-4 victory over the Diamondbacks on Friday. He allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings. The right-hander was on cruise control until the sixth inning, when he got taken deep twice, but Wheeler pushed through and helped give a weary Mets bullpen a breather.

He’s become the staff’s bulldog, working at least seven innings in seven of his last nine starts and posting a 3.96 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 70:13 K:BB in 61.1 frames over that stretch. The right-hander is 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA in six career starts against the Giants.

New York has allowed 42 first inning runs, the third-most in the majors. Only the Giants (60) have allowed more in the NL. The Mets have scored 35 first inning runs, tied for the ninth-most in the majors.
