Why Bet On Baltimore?
The Orioles had to be terrified when All-Star third baseman Manny Machado, the team’s best player, even with somewhat disappointing numbers, left Wednesday’s game vs. Pittsburgh. Machado was injured while attempting to apply a tag to Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen as he slid into third base. McCutchen accidentally spiked Machado’s left hand. Machado was looked at by trainers at the time but stayed in the game. He was eventually removed in the bottom of the third inning, as Ruben Tejada stood in the on-deck circle in Machado’s place. X-rays were negative, with Manager Buck Showalter saying Machado has a "pretty deep" cut on his hand and a “deep bruise.” He has also been diagnosed with a strained wrist, meaning the long-term prognosis is good, although he could miss at least a few games. Machado is batting .213 with 12 home runs and 27 RBIs. He is the leader in All-Star Game voting among AL third basemen. Yes, Machado has struggled offensively this season. But, given his track record, he’s not a player that opposing pitchers can take lightly. At any time, Machado is a threat to break out of his slump and re-emerge as a key cog in the lineup. Machado has been putting up another stellar defensive season at third base and likely will win another Gold Glove. That’s where the Orioles will most miss his presence if he’s out of commission. The Orioles could activate catcher Welington Castillo for this game. He was placed on the 10-day DL on May 31 after suffering a testicular injury the previous night on a deflected ball. He has been one of the Orioles’ most productive hitters, batting .317 with four home runs and 17 RBIs. It’s Chris Tillman on the mound. Tillman (1-3, 5.59) is still looking to find his way after spending the first month of the season on the disabled list. Tillman has not won since his first start on May 7, a span of five straight outings. The good news is Tillman averaged 91.4 mph on his fastball in last Sunday’s start, and was clocked at a season-high 94 mph during the outing. Tillman’s velocity has been trending up in each of his six starts.
