This year’s ALCS between the Red Sox and Astros is one of the best matchups in MLB playoff history between teams that won a combined 211 regular-season. Thus, it just couldn’t end in a sweep! It’s guaranteed not to with the series all tied 1-1 as it shifts to Houston for Game 3 on Tuesday night. The Astros are MLB odds favorites.

Why Bet on Boston?

The Sox evened things up with Sunday’s 7-5 home win. Jackie Bradley delivered a go-ahead three-run double off of Gerrit Cole in the third inning. The Red Sox entered the frame trailing 4-2, but Xander Bogaerts lined a one-out single into center and Steve Pearce followed with a double. Rafael Devers then drew a walk to load the bases. After Ian Kinsler struck out for the second out of the inning, Bradley sliced a double into the left-field corner to clear the bases and put the Red Sox ahead to stay.

Rafael Devers went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Look for him to start at third again over Eduardo Nunez. Mookie Betts went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Betts’ run-scoring double off of Tony Sipp in the eighth inning increased the Red Sox’ lead to 7-4. It’s just the third multi-hit game that Betts has had in his postseason career.

Craig Kimbrel escaped the ninth inning again on Sunday, shutting down the Astros to earn his third save of the postseason. Kimbrel was shaky his last time out, allowing two runs in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Yankees. On Sunday, he allowed a two-out double to George Springer and an RBI single to Jose Altuve, bringing Alex Bregman to the plate as the game’s tying run but Bregman flew out to left field.

Nathan Eovaldi (6-7, 3.81) will start Game 3 of the ALCS on Tuesday. Eovaldi came over from the Tampa Bay Rays on July 25 for minor league pitcher Jalen Beeks and went 3-3 with a 3.33 ERA for the Red Sox in 12 appearances (11 starts). His average fastball velocity for the season ranked third in the majors among pitchers with at least 100 innings, trailing only Yankees ace Luis Severino and Mets righty Noah Syndergaard.

Rick Porcello was previously lined up to start Game 3, but he was needed out of the bullpen in Sunday’s Game 2 victory. Eovaldi is coming off seven innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts and no walks in his Game 3 start against the Yankees during the ALDS. It was the best postseason start for any Red Sox since Jon Lester in Game 5 of the 2013 World Series.

Why Bet on Houston?

The Red Sox and Astros owned MLB’s 2 best records in the 2018 regular season. This is the 8th time that teams with sole possession of MLB’s 2 best records are meeting in the LCS. It previously happened in 2009 (NYY-LAA), 2007 (BOS-CLE), 1986 (NYM-HOU), 1983 (CWS-BAL), 1976 (CIN-PHI), 1972 (PIT-CIN), and 1971 (BAL-OAK).

The Astros have homered in 14 straight games, which broke the MLB postseason record set by the National League Astros from 2001-04. In the Astros’ last 14 postseason games, which dates back to Game 6 of the 2017 ALCS, they’ve hit 29 homers, including a four-homer game (Game 1) and a three-homer game (Game 3) last series.

Red Sox vs Astros moves to Houston for Game 3.

Gerrit Cole struggled in a losing effort against the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALCS on Sunday night, surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits over his six frames. Cole racked up five strikeouts on the night while issuing a pair of free passes. He hadn’t allowed more than four runs in a start this year.

Outfielder Marwin Gonzalez is hopeful he’ll be in the lineup for Game 3 of the ALCS. Gonzalez crashed into the left-field wall while trying to make a catch in the bottom of the third inning, banging up his head and neck in the process. He received treatment and an IV but was able to remain in the game. The hope is that he’ll be ready to go following Monday’s off-day.

It’s the lefty and former Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel (12-11, 3.74) on the mound. Keuchel limited the Indians to two runs over five innings last Monday as the Astros closed out their ALDS series with an 11-3 win. He’s 4-2 lifetime with a 3.28 ERA and 1.14 WHIP across nine appearances (eight starts) in his postseason career. Keuchel threw once against Boston this season, surrendering nine hits and five earned runs on Sept. 9 at Fenway Park.
