Mets ace and two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom was brilliant in his season debut on the mound and returns there on Wednesday for an interleague matchup vs. the Red Sox. The Mets are heavy favorites on the baseball betting odds because deGrom hasn’t given up a run in his past 28 innings.

A total of 17 of the Red Sox’s next 20 games will be against teams that finished 2019 with at least a .500 win %, including the next seven against the Mets (86-76), Yankees (103-59), and Rays (96-66). : This is the 10th time the Red Sox and Mets are meeting in an Interleague series. They played each other each season from 1997-2001, then again in 2006, 2009, 2015, and 2018. The Sox have won each of their last 2 series vs. NYM, taking 2 out of 3 games in 2015 and 2018.
The Red Sox’s pitching has been terrible in the early going, and Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke has said that recent signing Zack Godley “has a chance” to join the starting rotation. Roenicke wouldn’t commit to when that might happen, but Godley might be a pretty good option for the rotation and an upgrade given the other options in Boston. The former Diamondbacks starter racked up seven strikeouts over four scoreless innings in long relief Monday night against the Mets.
The Sox of course traded David Price to the Dodgers this offseason, lost Chris Sale in the spring to season-ending surgery and are without lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, who is awaiting results of additional testing after doctors recently discovered an issue with his heart they believe is a result of his recent bout with the coronavirus. Rodriguez posted career-best numbers in 2019 with 19 wins and a 3.81 ERA.
It’s Nathan Eovaldi here, and spun six innings of one-run ball on Friday in Boston’s 13-2 win over the Orioles on Opening Day. Eovaldi was in cruise control with the benefit of a huge lead. He scattered five hits, with the lone run scoring on a double from Renato Nunez in the sixth. He struck out four and walked one while throwing 89 pitches in the victory.
Among pitchers with at least 900.0 IP since the start of 2011, Eovaldi’s average fastball velocity of 97.0 mph is the highest in MLB. He missed roughly 3 months of the 2019 season on the injured list (right elbow injury).
Why Bet on NY Mets? The Mets own the best Interleague winning percentage in NL history. Their .517 winning percentage entering Monday (208-194) is the best mark in the Senior Circuit vs. AL clubs since Interleague play began in 1997.
Shortstop Amed Rosario ranked eighth in the majors and fourth in the NL with a .323 road batting average last year. He placed second in the majors with 104 hits on the road and tied for first with six triples in away games. Rosario batted .382 (52-136) with 24 runs, nine doubles, two triples, four home runs, 17 RBI, five walks, six steals, a .408 OBP, a .566 SLG and a .975 OPS in 32 games on the road in the second half.
It’s ace Jacob deGrom here. He was outstanding in a no-decision against the Braves in Friday’s season opener, racking up eight strikeouts over five shutout innings. The Mets’ ace allowed only a single to Ronald Acuna Jr. and issued one free pass on the afternoon. DeGrom was lifted after throwing only 72 pitches — which was likely Mets’ skipper Luis Rojas playing things cautiously after de Grom’s minor back issue last week.
His first strikeout came on a 99 mph fastball to Acuna. By the fifth inning, he was still throwing 98 mph sliders to strike out Austin Riley and Dansby Swanson back-to-back. DeGrom is now up to 28 consecutive scoreless innings bridging to last season. That’s a career-high mark.
“I was just letting it fly and letting the chips fall where they may,” deGrom said. “I would’ve liked a little bit earlier contact, but I didn’t want to make any mistakes. I wanted to try to go out there and put up zeroes and give us a chance to win, which we were fortunate enough to get a win. That was my main goal.”
DeGrom is the 27th different pitcher to start on Opening Day for the Mets and 11th pitcher to start multiple Opening Days for the franchise. Tom Seaver holds the record with 11 Opening Day nods. All 11 of those pitchers started at least one set of consecutive openers.
The right-hander is the 20th pitcher to win multiple Cys and the seventh NL hurler to win in consecutive seasons. He’s one of just three pitchers with multiple Cys and a Rookie of the Year Award (Tom Seaver, Justin Verlander).
