Rockies vs Padres – MLB Odds & Picks

Written by on September 8, 2020

Time is running out for the San Diego Padres to catch the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West Division. More likely, the Friars will be a Wild-Card team. The Colorado Rockies also could be one as they aren’t finishing higher than third in the West. Here’s a look at Wednesday’s series finale between the teams San Diego.

Why Bet on Colorado?

Historically, the Rockies have not fared well in San Francisco, as they are 11-18 in San Francisco since 2017 (entering this week). The biggest obstacle facing the Rockies and another trip to the postseason is they play six straight games at Coors Field against division-leading Dodgers and A’s from September 10-15.

Rockies manager Bud Black said David Dahl (back) could return at some point during the team’s current road trip. Dahl reportedly “had a good day,” per Black, on the field Sunday. “Word got back to me that he felt great, the ball came off his bat and he was driving the ball,” Black said. The 26-year-old has been out since August 17 with back soreness, and he hit a paltry .189/.238/.243 in 19 games before hitting the shelf.

Black appears to have finally settled on Raimel Tapia as the team’s everyday leadoff hitter. Tapia started off the season slowly, but Black has praised Tapia for making some mental adjustments and changing his approach. With Dahl injured and Garrett Hampson having cooled off, Black made him the leadoff man on Aug. 20. Since then, Tapia’s 4.42 pitches seen per plate appearance was the sixth-highest average of any National League Player. Last year, while replacing injured then-leadoff man Charlie Blackmon, Tapia batted just .255 with a .286 OBP in 86 leadoff plate appearances.

“I was doing my toe tap but staying back, or doing my toe tap then being way out front with my weight, so the leg kick helped me get that balance,” Tapia said. “And facing the pitcher allowed me to relax a lot more.”

It’s scheduled to be Antonio Senzatela (3-1) on the mound. Senzatela took a no-decision during Friday’s loss at Dodger Stadium, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three across 5.1 innings. After giving up a solo home run to Max Muncy in the first inning, Senzatela held the Dodgers at bay until the sixth, when Corey Seager tied the game with an RBI single. That would be the last damage of the night charged to Senzatela.

The right-hander has now allowed seven homers this season, five of which have been against the Dodgers. Senzatela will carry a 3.33 ERA and 1.13 WHIP into this matchup. He pitched vs. San Diego on Aug. 29 and fired seven scoreless innings.  Senzatela scattered seven hits but was saddled with a no-decision after the Rockies bullpen melted down in the eighth inning. He recorded three strikeouts and only issued one walk.

Why Bet on San Diego?

The have placed catcher Luis Campusano on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist sprain. Campusano homered in his debut Friday, was a late scratch on Saturday and now finds himself on the IL. A former second-round draft choice, Campusano is viewed as a consensus top-100 prospect in baseball—one who could have improved the Padres’ lackluster catching situation.

“If he continues to progress and make the same progression he had,” manager Jayce Tingler said, “we feel confident over a couple days we should be close to 100 percent and he should have an opportunity if things go well to … come back fully healthy down the stretch.”

With new additions Austin Nola and Jason Castro in place, the rookie would have plenty of competition for at-bats, both at catcher and at DH (with newly acquired Mitch Moreland on board as well). San Diego has promoted RHP Taylor Williams, taking Campusano’s spot on the active roster.

There is no question that if the season ended today Fernando Tatis Jr. would be the winner of the NL MVP award, which would be the first time a San Diego Padres player won it since Ken Caminiti in 1996. Tatis leads the entire league with 2.8 WAR.

It’s scheduled to be Zach Davies (6-2) on the mound. On four occasions this season, a Padres starter has pitched at least seven innings. Davies has authored three of those outings. He’s been San Diego’s most consistent starter, blending a high-80s fastball with a changeup that is proving unhittable.

Davies allowed four hits over seven innings and combined with two relievers on a 7-0 shutout of the A’s on Friday. Javier Guerra and Craig Stammen finished up with perfect frames. It’s the first time that Davies has thrown seven scoreless innings since July 25, 2017. It lowered his ERA to 2.23.  Davies earned a fourth straight win and has not allowed more than three earned runs in any outing this season while fanning at least five in all but one game so far.
