St. Louis At Atlanta 2017 MLB Winning Predictions

Written by on May 5, 2017

It has been something of an odd start to the MLB season in that we have seen some teams unexpectedly struggle through the opening month. While the fans of these teams are sure to be in a little bit of distress, the reality is that there is still an awful lot of time left for these teams to right the ship and perform as expected. One team that is certainly not living up to expectations is the St. Louis Cardinals.

They were expected to be the team that might test the World Champion Cubs in the NL Central, but at the early stage of the year, they find themselves a game under .500, albeit just 2.5 games back of the Cubs on top. One team that is delivering exactly as expected is the Atlanta Braves. They are in a brand-new stadium for this season, but are still very much in a rebuilding phase. The Cardinals have the opportunity to start turning things around this weekend versus a team that is struggling early on.

Why bet on the St. Louis Cardinals

Inconsistency has been the name of the game for the St. Louis Cardinals (13-14) through the first month of the season. They were very slow coming out the gate, but then went on a nice run to get back on pace. They have not been able to maintain that, though, and are coming into this series having lost 3 of their last 4 games. The main reason that the Cardinals are struggling right now is their inability to get runners home, as they are way down in the scoring ranks this season. The pitching staff has struggled with runners in scoring position, and when you combine those two issues, you can see why this team is heading into this series with a losing record. Mike Leake (3-1, 1.35 ERA) will get the start on Saturday.

Why bet on the Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves (11-15) have started life in their new ball park with an odd mix of players that includes up and coming talent and guys at the tail end of their careers. This is a team that is still very much in a rebuilding phase, and it shows at times. They have been a little better than many people expected, but not good enough to stay out of the cellar in the NL East. The Braves have managed to maintain a .500 record in their new digs, thanks in large part to the exploits of Freddie Freeman, who is posting some very big numbers early on. Julio Teheran (2-2, 4.33 ERA) will get the ball for the Braves.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

This is a nice little pitching match-up that we have for this one, but the slight edge goes to Mike Leake, as he has been outstanding so far. I like the Cardinals to come out on top here.
