The Giants (83-76) saw their season officially end earlier in the week with a loss to the LA Dodgers. There is a feeling of finality to the Giants season that goes beyond them playing their final game. A couple of veteran players have already announced their retirement from the sport, and you get the feeling that more changes will be coming. It’s unclear right now how willing ownership will be to spend money in the offseason, but you can bet that it will not be in the amounts that the Dodgers have thrown around in recent years. The Giants come into this series having gone just 5-5 in their last 10, and it is that lack of consistency that has plagued their season and been their undoing this year. Yusmeiro Petit (0-0. 3.65 ERA) will be brought out of the bullpen and into the starting spot for this one.
The Colorado Rockies (66-93) are a team that can hurt you with their bats, but the sad fact of the matter is that the runs they have piled up this season usually come in a losing cause. They have been pretty awful in terms of pitching and defense, and have given up a ridiculous 835 runs this season, which is far and away the worst number in baseball. This is a team that is a long way off from being in any positon to contend, as they would really need to wipe out their pitching staff and rebuild it from the ground up. That is not something that generally happens overnight. The Rockies are coming into this series having just been swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and are now just 3-7 in their last 10 games. Christian Bergman (3-1, 4.68 ERA) will get the start for the Rockies.
