The AL Central race this season might be the most fascinating of any in the majors as the Indians, White Sox and Twins are all good enough to win it. Chicago closes out a set in the Twin Cities on Wednesday night.

Monitor the status of White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada for a while. He is considered day-to-day with a leg issue. Moncada left Friday’s game in the ninth inning after injuring himself while sliding into second base. Manager Rick Renteria admitted that it’s the same issue in the back of Moncada’s leg that has bothered him off and on for a while.
Chicago second baseman Nick Madrigal is the first White Sox with two three-hit efforts in his first seven career games since Craig Wilson and Brian Simmons in 1998 (two each). Madrigal was recently activated off the injured list. José Abreu is attempting to become the fourth player (fifth time) in White Sox history to be named American League Most Valuable Player, joining Nellie Fox (1959), Dick Allen (1972) and Frank Thomas (1993-94). Abreu ranks among the American League leaders in numerous categories, including total bases, RBI and homers.
Luis Robert is attempting to become the seventh player in White Sox history to be named American League Rookie of the Year by the BBWAA. Robert leads AL rookie in many offensive categories.
The White Sox tried to trade for Indians ace Mike Clevinger before Monday’s trade deadline but lost out on him to the San Diego Padres. While the White Sox starting staff has posted some good numbers so far this season, there are questions about consistency past the elite 1-2 punch of Lucas Giolito and Dallas Keuchel at the top of the rotation. Dylan Cease has a low ERA but has had issues with walks, homers and jams.
It’s Reynaldo Lopez (0-1) on the mound here. Lopez allowed two runs in four innings in a no-decision against the Royals on Friday. He worked around trouble all evening, allowing six hits and a pair of walks. After throwing 50 pitches in his return from the injured list in his first start, Lopez got stretched out to 70 pitches on Friday. Lopez has not faced the Twins this year.
Why Bet on Minnesota? The Twins won two of three games from the White Sox to open the season, with each winning team scoring 10-plus runs. Minnesota won the 2019 season series, 13-6, including a 6-3 record at Target Field.
Minnesota was set to get a nice boost for Tuesday’s game with the White Sox as Michael Pineda was to make his season debut. Pineda has finished up a PED suspension that started last season and is ready to rejoin the Twins’ rotation.
The Twins still have a handful of guys on the injured list, led by catcher Mitch Garver, third baseman Josh Donaldson and outfielder Byron Buxton. Donaldson (calf) has been taking at-bats in intrasquad games at the Twins’ alternate training site. Buxton was placed on the IL on August 20 due to left shoulder inflammation, but he recently resumed hitting off a tee and continues to make steady progress.
Minnesota enters this series off being swept in Detroit over the weekend. It was the second time the team has been swept this season, also suffering a three-game sweep in Kansas City August 7-9 The Twins were swept just one time in 2019, a two-game series vs. the Mets.
It’s Jose Berrios (2-3, 4.75) scheduled for this one. Berrios surrendered three runs in 5 2/3 innings last Wednesday versus the Indians. The biggest hit against Berrios was a three-run blast from Jose Ramirez in the third inning. Wednesday was the second time in seven starts Berrios has allowed more than 10 baserunners. He walked four, bringing his season total to 18 walks in 36 innings. That’s pretty much double last year’s walk rate (51 BB in 200 1/3 IP). It was surprising the Twins didn’t have him matched up with Ryan Jeffers at catcher as the worked out so well in his previous start.
Berrios threw to Alex Avila against Cleveland and has given up eight runs and 10 walks in 17 innings while working with Avila. He’s given up 11 runs and seven walks in 13 innings with Mitch Garver and no runs and one walk over six innings in his one start with Jeffers.
Berrios pitched on Opening Day at the White Sox, allowing five runs in four innings in a no-decision. Berrios gave up a four-spot in the second inning, the big blow of which was a game-tying three-run homer from Yoan Moncada. Berrios struck out just one of the 19 batters he faced and induced just seven swinging strikes in his 75 pitches.
