Written by on July 7, 2017

Enjoy your Major League Baseball action this weekend because that’s all we get for live nightly sports in the USA until next Friday because of the All-Star break that begins after the final MLB game on Sunday night. It’s arguably the slowest time of the year. But we’ve found the top MLB betting picks to bet on Straight Up this upcoming weekend.

Winning SU MLB Betting Picks for the Weekend Action

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians

When: Saturday, June 8th. 7:15pm ET Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio TV: FS-D (Detroit) / SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland) Radio: 97.1 The Ticket (Detroit) / WTAM 1100 (Cleveland) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Justin Verlander is a former AL MVP and Cy Young winner who has been the face of the Detroit Tigers for about a decade. Yet this could be his final start in a Detroit uniform. Rumors are swirling that the Tigers want to deal their ace because he’s owed $28 million each of the next two seasons. Detroit is going nowhere so would rather clear payroll and get a prospect or two. The Cubs have been mentioned as a trading partner. With Verlander’s ERA at 4.96, the Tigers likely would need to include cash in order to facilitate a trade with the Cubs. If I’m Detroit GM Al Avila, I am not starting Verlander against the Indians on Saturday because they have owned him. Last Sunday, Verlander was tagged for seven runs on nine hits and three walks without a strikeout in 3 1/3 innings vs. the Indians.

It’s Not a Good Moment for Verlander

It’s the first time that Verlander fails to record even a single strikeout in a start since April 28, 2007 against the Twins. It’s the fourth time in Verlander’s last seven starts against Cleveland that he’s charged with at least seven runs. No other team scores seven runs in a game off Verlander even once during that time, dating back to May 2016. Verlander has won only two of his last 15 starts against the Indians, and his total of 23 losses versus Cleveland is the highest by any pitcher during the expansion era that began in 1961. The Tribe start Mike Clevinger. He was opposite Verlander last Sunday and held the Tigers to one run on two hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in six innings. Go Cleveland here.

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays

When: Sunday, June 9th. 1pm ET Where: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida TV: NESN (Boston) / Fox Sports Sun (Tampa Bay) Radio: WCEC 1490 AM (Boston) / WDAE 620 AM (Tampa Bay) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Odds: TBA David Price was the best pitcher in Rays history and is the only Cy Young winner in franchise history. He faces his former team in a series finale Sunday. Price (4-2, 4.02) left his team’s game at Texas in the seventh inning Tuesday because of an apparent injury to his pitching hand, but manager John Farrell said afterward that Price was removed because of a high pitch count and long sixth inning. Farrell was accompanied by the team trainer, however, when he came out to the mound and removed Price from the game. Price registered his best start in eight tries since returning from the disabled list, cruising to a win behind a lineup that scored seven runs during the opening five innings.

So Who Could Be the Pitcher from Tampa Bay?

It’s Rays ace Chris Archer, who might get a trade during the break. Archer is the best pitcher Tampa has had since Price was traded a few years ago. Archer won after giving up three runs on eight hits and three walks with eight strikeouts over six innings Tuesday against the Cubs. Archer now has a 3.95 ERA this season, which isn’t that great. But the right-hander is posting a stellar 139-to- 36 K/BB ratio and allowed just 11 homers in 116 1/3 innings, leading to a 3.02 FIP in 2017. Archer’s last outing was a special one, as he made not only his 11th quality start of the year, but also tallied his first career hit and RBI. The Rays have won in four of Archer’s last five starts, while he’s gone at least six innings in his last 9. Go under the total here, which likely will be set at 8.5-9. Kansas City Royals at Los Angeles Dodgers

When: Sunday, June 9th. 1pm ET Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California TV: FSKC (Kansas City) / SportsNet LA (LA) Radio: KCSP 610 (Kansas City) / KTNQ 1020 (LA) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA I’ll just keep this simple: anytime Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is on the mound, bet L.A. Kershaw (13-2, 2.19) was named to the NL All-Star team and might have started the game for the first time in his career, but he will be ineligible to pitch in the game if he starts Sunday as expected. Pitchers who start their team’s final game before the break aren’t eligible for the All-Star Game and are replaced on the roster. Kershaw improved to 13-2 on the season on Tuesday, when he pitched seven shutout innings in a win against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He’s the first Dodgers pitcher with 13 wins before the All-Star break since Orel Hershiser in 1988. Kershaw allowed two hits and lowered his ERA to 2.19 and his WHIP to 0.89. Guy is a freak.

Who Will Take the Mound for Kansas City?

The Royals are countering with lefty Danny Duffy. In his first start since returning from the disabled list with a strained oblique muscle, Duffy tossed 5 2/3 innings in a win over Seattle. The left-hander gave up two runs on five hits, while walking two batters and striking out four. Travis Wood’s turn was skipped to move Duffy up to start Sunday against the Dodgers. “He’s our No. 1 starter. It was an easy decision,” manager Ned Yost said of Duffy. “And he’s healthy.” Parlay the Dodgers and under the total on this one.
