Yankees vs Giants MLB Odds, Preview & Expert Prediction

Written by on April 26, 2019

Tough to get too excited about a single MLB series during a long season, but it will be a sold-out raucous atmosphere in San Francisco this weekend as the New York Yankees make a rare visit to AT&T Park. It’s a terrific pitching matchup for Friday’s opener against the Giants with the Yanks as short MLB Betting favorites.

Yankees vs Giants MLB Odds, Preview & Expert Prediction

Last Meeting

With interleague play, the teams meet only every few years and they haven’t since 2007 at AT&T Park. The last series was in 2016 at Yankee Stadium and New York won two of three. Both every different clubs since then. The franchises have met in the playoffs a handful of times, last in 1962.

Why Bet on NY Yankees?

The Yankees will lose the designated hitter for this interleague matchup in the National League park. New York just can’t keep guys healthy. The latest to land on the injured list was red-hot outfielder Clint Frazier with a left ankle sprain that popped up this week and has been more temperamental than previously believed. The injury happened in the middle of Monday’s series opener at the Angels, when he jammed his foot awkwardly into second base while retreating on a pickoff attempt.

Frazier is batting .324 with six homers and 17 RBIs in the 18 games since he was called up for Giancarlo Stanton. And Stanton won’t be back soon. His recovery from an arm injury has hit a snag. Although the left biceps strain that landed Stanton on the IL on April 1 has completely healed, a separate left shoulder problem has appeared. Mike Tauchman is suddenly an everyday player for New York, at least until the club gets a little healthier. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (calf) has started facing live hitting and could be close to playing in an extended spring training game. He could be back with the Yankees by the middle of May.

It’s lefty James Paxton on the mound. Paxton struck out 12 and gave up just three hits and one walk over six scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Royals on Sunday. The left-hander was lights out for a second straight start and was unlucky not to get rewarded with the win as his bullpen melted down and coughed up a 5-0 lead.

Paxton is locked in at the moment, as he’s racked up 24 strikeouts against just two walks over his last 14 innings without allowing a run over that time. He’s now sporting a 3.10 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and an excellent 43:8 K: BB through 29 innings. David Cone (1998) is the only other Yankee to have back-to-back games of 12 or more strikeouts.

Why Bet on San Francisco?

The Giants enter on a three-game winning streak after winning a series finale in Pittsburgh on Sunday and taking two straight in Toronto early this week. Pablo Sandoval belted his second homer Wednesday. The 32-year-old has fared reasonably well in limited playing time this year, slashing .333/.333/.694 over 36 at-bats. Wednesday was only his fifth start of the season and his third at the hot corner.

Buster Posey supplied an RBI double Wednesday. Posey chased Clay Buchholz from the game in the sixth by slugging a double to deep center field, scoring Gerardo Parra with the Giants’ third run. The former MVP has been a major disappointment in the early going, though he’s come to life a bit with six hits in his last five games. That mini hot streak has raised his average from .196 to .230.

Yankees vs Giants is going to be a fun one.

The Giants haven’t scored a run in the 1st frame this season. Their streak of 24 games to start the season without scoring a 1st inning run is the second-longest such streak in MLB history. The next longest streak by the Giants to start a season without a run in the 1st inning was 17-straight in 1954 (since 1912). The Giants have 14 losses this season, 13 of which have been by three-runs-or-fewer. SF’s only loss by more than three runs was a 4-0 defeat to Colorado on April 14.

It’s Giants lefty ace Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner (1-3) allowed four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk across six innings in a loss to the Pirates on Friday. It looked like Bumgarner was headed for an uneventful first inning, but with two outs and nobody on, five straight hitters reached for the Pirates, and they scored four runs.

Bumgarner yielded only three baserunners (one on an error) after that, but the damage was already done, and the Giants couldn’t muster any offense against the Pirates. Bumgarner is 1-3 with a 3.66 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 30 strikeouts in 32 innings across five starts this season.
