Yankees vs Mets – MLB Odds & Picks

Written by on September 2, 2020

The marquee matchup around MLB on Thursday is clearly the Subway Series between the Yankees and Mets from Queens – although the Yanks are missing several regulars due to injury and the Mets simply aren’t very good.

Why Bet on NY Yankees?

The Yanks are currently in the span of playing their final 33 games in the span of 31 days (8/28-9/27), with their only off day coming on Sept. 14. They are in the midst of playing 18 of 20 games (8/11-9/3) in New York.

In a huge surprise, the Yankees didn’t make any deals ahead of Monday’s trade deadline. They had been linked to several guys, especially Texas Rangers pitcher Lance Lynn. Lynn wasn’t traded. The Yankees were also connected to pitchers like Mike Clevinger, Taijuan Walker, Kevin Gausman, Mike Minor and Robbie Ray. Reports have indicated GM Brian Cashman turned down a Deivi Garcia and Clint Frazier package deal for Clevinger, a premium starting pitcher who has two years of arbitration left on his contract.  New York also looked at Arizona outfielder Starling Marte, but he was dealt to Miami.

So, for the second straight MLB trade deadline and just the fourth time since 1998, the New York Yankees stood pat at the trade deadline. The Yankees have had a crazy amount of injuries, but the holes created from those injuries are mostly temporary in nature. DJ LeMahieu is already back, Gio Urshela looks to have dodged a bullet, Zack Britton and Gleyber Torres are making positive progress.  Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and James Paxton hope to be back later this month.

Earlier this week, first baseman Luke Voit became one of six players in franchise history (ninth time) to hit at least 13 homers through the team’s first 33 games of a season, joining Babe Ruth (four times), Aaron Judge (once), Mickey Mantle (once), Tino Martinez (once) and Alex Rodriguez (once).

It’s lefty JA Happ (1-1) scheduled for this one. Happ was on point last Saturday versus the Mets, tossing 7 1/3 scoreless innings but settling for a no-decision in the Yankees’ 2-1 win. Happ was in a groove as he tossed 64 of his 90 pitches for strikes and did not walk a batter for the first time this season.

Happ yielded just three singles, didn’t walk anyone and notched five strikeouts. He was not happy when manager Aaron Boone elected to pull him after he retired the first batter of the eighth, and reliever Adam Ottavino served up a game-tying homer to the first batter he saw in Wilson Ramos, costing Happ a shot at a win.

It’s just the second time in Happ’s career that he’s gone at least 7 1/3 frames and allowed no runs and three or fewer baserunners. Happ’s last two outings have been strong as he aims to reverse an underwhelming beginning to the season.

Why Bet on NY Mets?

The Mets and Yankees played five games last weekend, and the Mets lost the final three. In Sunday’s first game of a doubleheader, the Mets struck out only there Yankees. The team had struck out at least five batters in a franchise-record 75 consecutive games from August 14, 2019 – August 29, 2020.

The Mets landed three players ahead of Monday’s trade deadline: third baseman Todd Frazier from the Rangers, reliever Miguel Castro from the Orioles and catcher Robinson Chirinos from the Rangers.

Frazier was batting .241/.322/.380 with 11 runs, seven doubles, one triple, two home runs and seven RBI in 31 games this season. Frazier spent two years with the Mets from 2018-19 and appeared in 248 games with the club, batting .233/.316/.418 with 117 runs, 37 doubles, two triples, 39 homers, 126 RBI and 10 steals. Frazier brings an established veteran presence to the Mets locker room as they make a final push to the playoffs over the final month of the season. The Mets will hold a $5.75 million club option for 2021 on Frazier or a $1.5 million buyout.

Chirinos had appeared in 14 games for the Rangers this year and was batting .119/.224/.143 with three runs, one double and two RBI.  Castro appeared in 16 games for the Orioles and was 1-0 with a 4.02 ERA (seven earned runs/15.2 innings) with five walks and 24 strikeouts. The right-hander should operate in the late stages for the Mets over the final month of the 2020 campaign.

The Mets haven’t named a starter yet for Thursday as they are thin in the rotation right now due to injuries. Steven Matz was the latest lost as the lefty is dealing with left shoulder bursitis, per Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen. Matz was placed on the injured list Sunday and will likely be sidelined for at least a couple of weeks, though Van Wagenen expressed optimism Monday that this won’t be a long-term issue.

It could be David Peterson (3-1, 3.51) here. Peterson (shoulder) allowed three runs in four innings in his return from the injured list Friday against the Yankees. Peterson was rusty in his return from shoulder fatigue, allowing four hits with three walks while throwing just 37 out of 70 pitches for strikes.
