It’s lefty Martin Perez (2-2, 3.38) on the mound, and he has been a huge surprise. However, Perez (2-2) took the loss last Tuesday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 5.2 innings as the Red Sox were defeated 8-2 by the Rays. He struck out five. Perez settled down after allowing a Mike Brosseau leadoff homer in the first and largely held the Rays’ offense at bay.
“Good command. Other than the home run to lead off, I thought he pitched great,” Manager Ron Roenicke said. “Great changeup. Fastballs in, cutters in. Threw some curveballs, but the changeup and fastball, I thought, were outstanding. He battles. He kept us in the game. You figure if he keeps us in the game like that, we’re going to get a lead somewhere and we weren’t able to do it.”
Perez, who entered the season as Boston’s No. 2 starter after Chris Sale (Tommy John surgery) and Eduardo Rodriguez (COVID-19) were ruled out, struggled in his Sox debut but has been stellar in his past three starts with owns a 2.20 ERA in 16 ⅓ innings, going at least five innings in all three outings. Perez was originally to start Sunday vs. Boston but New York but was given an extra day of rest.
Perez has pitched just once at Yankee Stadium in his career, giving up seven runs over five innings on Aug. 12, 2018.

AL batting leader DJ LeMahieu will get a second opinion on his sprained left thumb on Monday. The Yankees will have a better idea at that point how long the second baseman might be sidelined. They will also consult with the hand specialist who treated LeMahieu in 2018 when he suffered a similar injury. LeMahieu was placed on the injured list Sunday.
It’s lefty Jordan Montgomery (2-1, 5.17) on the hill for the Yankees. Montgomery allowed three runs over six innings last Tuesday in the Yankees’ 9-6 defeat of the Braves. Montgomery allowed just one hit through 5 1/3 innings before giving up two straight singles followed by a three-run homer from Marcell Ozuna. He recovered to finish the inning at just 78 pitches and was done.
“Confidence,” Montgomery said afterward about the outing. “I really went after them, trusted my pitches better, threw my cutter more, executed more fastballs and changeups late.”
Montgomery will face the Red Sox for the second time this season as he beat them by allowing one run over 5 2/3 innings on July 31.
