Every single sport across the globe was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but we are now slowly beginning to see a return to action. For some sports, that means finishing seasons that were interrupted by the lockdown, while for others, it means starting from scratch, which is the case with MotoGP. They had only managed to get in one event before the pandemic hit, but the main MotoGP race was not run at that one, as it was Moto2 and Moto3 who gad their races before things ground to a halt. The Spanish Grand Prix, which goes on Sunday night, will serve as the first race of the season, so there is a lot to be excited about. Can anyone knock Marc Marquez out of the top spot, or will the Spaniard win it all again this season? Let’s take a look at some of the favorites for this weekend so you can place your bets against their MotoGP odds.
MotoGP Gran Premio Red Bull de España
Marc Marquez
Over the last 10 years, the sport of MotoGP has been totally dominated by one man. Marc Marquez has been crowned world champion in 8 of the last 10 seasons and is coming into 2020 looking to win his 5th straight title. That is a level of excellence that is tough to match, and to make matters worse, he will be starting out this season by racing in his home country, which is sure to serve as added incentive to win, not that this guy needs it. He has won the Spanish Grand Prix in each of the last 2 seasons and has never been worse than 3rd in the last 6. He looks as close to a sure bet as you can get.
Fabio Quartararo
The Frenchman made the step up from Moto2 last season and ended up having a very good year, finishing 5th overall in the standings. Despite making a positive start to his MotoGP career, Quartararo did not manage to take a single checkered flag in 2019, although he did manage to land in the top 5 an impressive 8 times, which included 5 second-place finishes. You would like him to take another step forward this season, and he can’t do worse in this race than he did last year, when he was forced to retire.
Maverick Vinales
If you want to talk about consistency, you need to bring Maverick Vinales into the conversation. It is always tough when one person dominates a sport, but Vinales has done a nice job of hanging with his fellow countryman Marquez. Vinales had finished 3rd or 4th in the standings in each of the last 4 seasons, but he would love nothing more than to finally make that major breakthrough. He has never won the Spanish GP, but had his best career finish there last season, when he came in 3rd. Likely to be more of the same this weekend.
Andrea Dovizioso
If any rider has a reason to be frustrated at the dominance shown by Marc Marquez in Moto GP, it would have to be Dovizioso. He has finished runner-up to the champion in each of the last 3 seasons and will be coming into 2020 looking to finally get one step ahead of the reigning champion. The Spanish GP has proven to be a bit of a bogey race for Dovizioso, though, as he has never won it and has been forced to retire twice in the last 4 seasons. He should be top 5 here, but that’s about it.
