Marquez returns after scary spill in Indonesia Grand Prix
While warming up for the Indonesian Grand Prix, Marc Marquez suffered a spill, which resulted in a subsequent diplopia diagnosis. Diplopia is the medical term for double-vision.
The Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia happened on March 20. Marquez missed that event and the following, the Grand Premio Michelin de La República Argentina on April 3.
Doctors cleared Marquez to return to the track for the Red Bull Grand Prix. Marquez is such a MotoGP force that although he has missed a couple of races, he may go off a less than even money chalk to win at the Circuit of the Americas.
MotoGP fans call Marquez The King of COTA
At the Circuit of Americas, Marc Marquez is king. In Austin, the chalk to win the MotoGP Championship has failed at the Circuit of Americas just one time. Marquez won at the COTA in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021.
The lone non-victory happened in 2019 when Marquez crashed after building a comfortable lead. If he hadn’t crashed, the race favorite would be undefeated at the Circuit of Americas.
This week, Marquez said he will use the Red Bull Grand Prix to get back in tune with his Repsol Honda teammates, which means the chalk could be vulnerable.
Options if you don’t want to back Marquez
If you decide the King of COTA uses the race to get back into the groove, there are a couple of strong options. The first is Alex Rins, who finished third in Argentina last Sunday.
Rins finished fifth in Indonesia in the race before. He picked up the pieces when Marquez crashed in 2019. Not only that, but Rins has a Moto2 and Moto3 victory over the track. So the Team Suzuki Ecstar racer could pull off the upset win.
Another racer with a shot is Aprilia Racing’s Aleix Espargaro. He finished fourth in Qatar, the first race of year, in the top ten in Indonesia, and won the Argentina Grand Prix.
If Marquez isn’t at his best, or uses the Red Bull GP to get his motorcycle under him, Rins or Espargaro could pick up the pieces and take the checkered flag.
There’s another thing MotoGP handicappers must consider. Marquez didn’t win in Qatar, and couldn’t race at Indonesia or Argentina, which means the championship chalk hasn’t won a race in three straight.
If he doesn’t win in a fourth straight, future MotoGP bettors must consider looking to a different racer. The problem is that, so far, nobody has stepped up into the void Marquez left.
The first three races were won by 3 different racers. It might make sense to see what transpires on Sunday in Austin, wait for odds to adjust, and then decide which racer has the best shot to win the MotoGP Championship.
