The only active drivers to win this event that are competing in this year’s race are Kevin Harvick (2003, ’19), Kyle Busch (2015, ’16), Brad Keselowski (2018), Jimmie Johnson (2006, ’08, ’09, ’12), and Ryan Newman (2013). Chevrolet won 14 of 17 from 2001 to 2017, but Ford has won each of the last two Brickyard 400 titles. Toyota’s only wins in this event came with Busch behind the wheel.

No. 1 Kevin Harvick
The veteran driver is atop the NASCAR Cup Series standings and comes into this event off a fantastic weekend at NASCAR’s Pocono Raceway doubleheader. Harvick took the checkered flag in Saturday’s Pocono 325 before finishing second to Denny Hamlin in Sunday’s Pocono 350. Harvick also won in Atlanta on June 7 and at Darlington in May and has recorded 12 Top-10 finishes, eight Top-5 finishes and three wins in 15 races this year.
No. 2 Denny Hamlin
Hamlin is fourth in the NASCAR standings, but he’s arguably the hottest driver on the circuit. Hamlin finished second to Harvick in Saturday’s Pocono 325 before taking the checkered flag in Sunday’s Pocono 350. More importantly, Hamlin has racked up a stellar, 10 Top-10 finishes this year while also recording a NASCAR-best , nine Top-5 finishes and a NASCAR-leading four wins this season. Hamlin comes into the Brickyard 400 having won half of the last four races while finishing sixth in the 2019 Brickyard 400.
No. 3 Ryan Blaney
Blaney is second in the NASCAR standings despite finishing a modest 12th in Saturday’s Pocono 325 and a discouraging 22nd in Sunday’s Pocono 350. Nevertheless, Blaney has recorded seven Top-10 finishes this year and an identical seven, Top-5 finishes. Blaney also won at Talladega two weeks ago and finished fifth in the Brickyard 400 a year ago.
No. 4 Chase Elliott
Currently in fourth place in the NASCAR standings, Elliott has recorded nine Top-10 finishes in 15 races while also racking up seven Top-5 finishes and one win at Charlotte on May 27. After finishing 25th in Saturday’s Pocono 325, Elliott rebounded nicely with a fourth place finish in Sunday’s Pocono 350. Elliott finished ninth in this event a year ago and looks poised to challenge for the win this year.
No. 5 Bubba Wallace
Last, but not least, Bubba Wallace is my longshot pick for the upset in Sunday’s Brickyard 400. I know Wallace has gained a bunch of publicity for his efforts to fight racism in NASCAR and the recent noose drama he was subjected to, but Wallace has recorded a pair of Top-5 finishes this year while finishing an encouraging third in last year’s 2019 Brickyard 400.
