Blazers vs Mavericks Season Series

Portland leads 1-0. The Trail Blazers beat the Mavericks in Dallas on Oct. 27, 121-119. CJ McCollum led the Trail Blazers with 35 points to go with six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Damian Lillard had 28 points with five assists. Kristaps Porzingis paced the Mavericks with 32 points nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Luka Doncic recorded 29 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists and three steals.

The home team had won five straight and six of the previous showdowns prior to that first Blazers win. Ten of the last 11 meetings between Dallas and Portland have been decided by single digits (the Mavericks have gone 5-6 in their last 11 matchups with the Blazers).

The Mavericks are 49-32 all-time at home against the Blazers.

Why Bet on Portland?

The Blazers won their second in a row Wednesday, a 117-107 upset in Houston. The Trail Blazers led by double figures for most of the game, but the Rockets began cutting into the lead in the fourth. A 3 by Ben McLemore got them within five with about five minutes to go. But CJ McCollum and Carmelo Anthony then made consecutive 3-pointers for Portland to make it 111-100 with four minutes left, and Houston didn’t threaten again.

The real story was Portland’s defense on NBA leading scorer James Harden. He was 3-for-12 from the field for a season-low 13 points. The Blazers and their 24th-ranked defense double-teamed and trapped Harden all night. With the win, the Blazers (18-24) improved to 5-14 against teams with winning records.

“We tried to get the ball out of his hands in different ways,” Coach Terry Stotts said. “Obviously, he didn’t shoot the ball well, but I thought our guys took the challenge of trying to get the ball out of his hands and having him be less of a factor.”

Hassan Whiteside had 18 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks in 37 minutes. He’s leading the league in blocks at 2.9 per game and ranks fourth in rebounds at 13.9 per game (behind only Clint Capela, Rudy Gobert and Andre Drummond), and he’s ninth in FG percentage at 59.4%.

All five players in Portland’s starting lineup scored at least 10 points. Damian Lillard scored 25 points and McCollum added 24. Carmelo Anthony shot 7-of-10 from the field for 18 points vs. Houston, adding 12 rebounds. He’s averaging 17.9 points and 5.9 rebounds this month. Lillard ranks seventh in the NBA in scoring (26.8) and is eighth in the league in assists (7.6). McCollum ranks 20th in the league in scoring (21.9).

Why Bet on Dallas?

The Mavs won their third in a row Wednesday, 127-123 at Sacramento. Luka Doncic handed out a career-high 17 assists, adding 25 points, 15 rebounds and six turnovers in 34 minutes. It was the 20th career triple-double for Doncic to make him the second-fastest player to get to 20 ever.

Doncic became the ninth player with a 25/15/15 triple-double and the first of that group under age 21. He also became the second Maverick ever (Jason Kidd) with a 25/15/15 triple-double line. Doncic was also 9-of-10 from the line tonight after making just 68.3% of his attempts in his previous seven January games. Guy is unbelievable. Since the ABA-NBA merger (1976-77), there have been only six players who have finished a season in the top-20 in points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game but Doncic is on pace to do it this season.

Dwight Powell kept his hot streak going by making 8-of-10 from the field for 17 points with nine rebounds, one assist and no turnovers in 35 minutes. He’s having a huge month with Kristaps Porzingis out. Over his last three games, Powell is shooting 83.3% (25 of 30).

What about Porzingis?

Porzingis was expected to return from injury on Wednesday but said he started experiencing pain in his sore right knee while going through his pregame routine on Wednesday, so the medical staff decided to hold him out.

Blazers vs Mavericks should be a good one.

“Just a little bit of pain in certain movements. Didn’t feel that good out there,” said Porzingis. “It felt great [Tuesday]. I had a solid workout, 25 or 30 minutes. Felt good. Didn’t feel any sharp pain or anything like that. [But Wednesday] I kind of felt it a little bit when I started warming up.”

Seth Curry scored 21 points off the bench and Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 18. Despite playing the second of a back-to-back, the Mavs scored 71 points in the first half and handed the Kings their third straight loss.
