2020 NBA Championship

Looked like rings in the Lakers’ future before Game 3 Heat win

In the first two games, the Lakers did whatever they wanted. In Game 1, after both Goran Dragic and Bam Adebayo went to the bench, Los Angeles dominated the Heat 116-98. Miami played much better in Game 2, but they still lost by 10 points, 114-124. Then came game three where the Heat made the Lakers look lost on the court.

One of the reasons the Heat have had so much success this past decade is because they’ve got one of the best coaches in National Basketball Association history. Erik Spoelstra game plans better than any coach in the NBA.

Spoelstra came out with a very specific plan in Game 3. It involved starting four shooters and 7’ 0” center Meyers Leonard. Jimmy Butler, Jae Crowder, Tyler Herro, and Duncan Robinson can all drain mid-range jumpers. They’re also good three point shooters.

Butler paced the Heat with 40, but the reason Jimmy connected on 14-of-20 is because the Lakers couldn’t leave the other shooters alone. Also, Miami ran players off ball screens and to the basket. That’s what college coaches teach every day. How else do we explain the Heat shooting over 51% from the field and just 35% from three?

Now, it’s up to the Lakers to make adjustments. But what adjustments can the Lakers make? Spoelstra played man-to-man and doubled Davis and LeBron when they got the ball. Los Angeles shot 33% from three, which isn’t bad. But the Heat held LAL to 43% from the field, which is atrocious.

How will the Lakers switch things up so they can shoot better from the field? That question is directed toFrank Vogel, whose job it will be to figure it out.

Heat’s Bam Adebayo could return for Game 4

Bam Adebayo could return in Game 4. If Spoelstra has Adebayo back, he could do more things on both defense and offense. Spoelstra won’t force the issue, though. The Lakers must prove that they can switch it up to counter Erik’s adjustments.

Miami’s Game 3 victory showed that the Heat aren’t going away in this series. Strategy and tactics will determine the winner of the 2020 NBA Finals. LeBron and Anthony Davis, after the Game 3 loss, realized that even though they’re the two best players on the court, they can’t will their team to victory.

The Lakers require Vogel to do his job and come up with a viable counter to Spoelstra’s adjustments. We’ll see if Frank does.
