This is one of those baseball-type series where teams play back-to-back games in the same city, with the Pacers and Hawks also meeting on Saturday night to conclude the season series. They have met just once so far, on Feb. 1 in Indianapolis. Indiana was a 9.5-point favorite and won 132-127.

Pascal Siakam made a key 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter and finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead Indiana.

Andrew Nembhard had 19 points, Obi Toppin added 18 points and nine rebounds, and Haliburton had 17 points and nine assists. Indiana only had 11 turnovers and wound up with a 15-5 advantage in points off turnovers.

Trae Young

In a losing effort, Atlanta’s Young tallied his eighth game of the season with 30+ points and 10+ assists, in addition to his third game with 30+ points and 15+ assists, finishing with game highs of 34 points and 17 assists.

Rookie No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher finished with 17 points. The teams traded leads throughout the fourth quarter, but Indiana seized control when Siakam’s 3 with 3:20 to go spurred an 11-3 run. Pacers assistant coach Lloyd Pierce was the head coach of the Hawks for two-and-a-half seasons (2018-21).

Atlanta leads the all-time series vs. Indiana 109-100 but has lost the past five overall and two in a row at home.

Haliburton Rolling for Pacers

Indiana is striving for home-court advantage, tied with the Bucks for the No. 4 seed. Tyrese Haliburton, after a slow start, is back to All-Star form, averaging 23.2 points and 12.0 assists on 60% shooting since the All-Star break.

In the impressive 115-102 home win over Houston, Haliburton had arguably his best performance of the season with 28 points and 15 assists, his third time with 15 assists and only three turnovers in those games.

Since the All-Star break, he is averaging 23.9 points on 60% shooting, 54.5% on three-pointers, 84 total assists and just eight turnovers. Jokic is the only one averaging 12.0 assists since then.

“I’m just in a zone right now,” Haliburton said. “I think I’m just trying to play the right way, just trying to make the right plays and staying aggressive, understanding that when I’m aggressive, I’m at my best.”

Bennedict Mathurin missed his third consecutive game on Tuesday due to a sprained left wrist and is doubtful for Thursday. Coach Rick Carlisle noted he is also facing knee and Achilles tendon issues. Mathurin averages 16.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Nesmith and reserve Jarace Walker have increased their playtime.

Hawks Trying to Improve Play-In Spot

Atlanta currently sits ninth in the East and can’t get to as high as sixth and avoid the play-in tournament. But the Hawks could get to as high as seventh, currently held by Miami. There’s no chance they drop lower than ninth.

The Hawks fell to the Bucks 127-121 at home, marking their sixth loss in eight games. Trae Young scored 28 points with 13 assists but struggled, shooting 9-for-24. Since the All-Star break, he has averaged 23.3 points and 11.6 assists per game, despite a 36.5% field goal percentage.

Coach Quin Snyder missed Tuesday’s game with an illness but should be back Thursday. Snyder was with the team for pregame functions, including his regular media availability. The Hawks don’t have a designated top assistant, but Igor Kokoskov, a native of Serbia who has coached in the NBA for 19 years, was the choice to fill in.

Wing Caris LeVert and forward Georges Niang, part of the De’Andre Hunter trade, have shown scoring prowess for the Hawks, but struggle defensively together, leading to a deficit of 7.6 points per 100 possessions.

Pacers vs Hawks NBA Expert Prediction

Atlanta’s Trae Young has scored 10-or-more points in all but one of his 22 career meetings against the Pacers, including 10 games with 25-or-more points. In 22 career games against Indiana, Young is averaging 25.3 points on .450 FG%, .401 3FG% and .920 FT%. Over his last five games, Hawks trade acquisition Chris Evert is averaging 20.2 points on .542 FG% and 1.000 FT%, 3.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.8 steals in 29.8 minutes.

Dyson Daniels

Guard Daniels leads the NBA with 3.0 assists per game and has 172 steals this season, the highest since Victor Oladipo’s 177 in 2017-18. The Hawks recorded 30 games with 30+ assists this season, a franchise first.

Indiana’s Streak

The Pacers have won five of their first seven games since the All-Star break. They have outscored their opponents by 6.3 points per game over the past 26 outings and averaged 119.1 points per game on 49.8 percent shooting. Defensively, they have limited opponents to 112.8 PPG, 47.4 percent shooting and 35.1 percent from 3-point range.

Much of Indiana’s season turnaround has come as a result of improvement on the defensive end of the court. The Pacers have allowed 112.9 points per game on 46.6 percent shooting over the last 35 games, for a defensive rating of 111.8 (9th in the NBA over that span).

Indiana is 20-2 when Tyrese Haliburton scores 20 or more points, 7-1 when he scores 30 or more and 15-5 when he records a double-double. Pacers 119, Hawks 117.
