Season Series

Utah leads 2-1. The Jazz has split the last four games at the Moda Center with Portland, 2-2, with their most recent win coming earlier this season, 120-90, behind a 24-point eight-assist outing from Ricky Rubio. Rudy Gobert has been on a tear against the Trail Blazers, logging a double-double in 10 of his last 11 games. In those 11 matchups versus Portland, Gobert is averaging 13.0 points, 11.7 assists and 3.2 blocks in 34.0 minutes.

Utah is 6-1 in its last seven matchups with the Blazers when scoring 100+ points. In three games against the Jazz this season, Damian Lillard has averaged 21.7 points (45.6% FG, 38.9% 3-PT, 75.0% FT), 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists. Jusuf Nurkic recorded 22 points (8-17 FG, 6-8 FT), eight rebounds and seven assists while matching his career high with six blocks at Utah on Jan. 21.

Why Bet on Jazz?

Utah won its third straight on Sunday, 125-111 at Minnesota. Utah shot 71 percent (27 of 38) during the second half for its second victory in three nights over the Timberwolves. Minnesota briefly led 83-82 late in the period before Donovan Mitchell helped key a 21-9 run. Utah opened the fourth with three straight 3-pointers — two by Kyle Korver and one from Joe Ingles — to rebuild the lead to nine. Utah led by as many as 14 in the fourth.

Mitchell had 29 points, five assists, four rebounds, two 3-pointers, and one turnover. Mitchell had been extremely efficient on offense lately, but he slowed down during consecutive games vs. the Wolves, shooting a combined 36.9% over the weekend. Ingles had 15 points, six assists, two rebounds, two steals, and two 3-pointers in 36 minutes. He’s shooting 42.8% from the field and 35.7% from deep, which is far below his numbers the previous two seasons.

Since 1/9, Mitchell is averaging 30.6 points on .471 shooting, including a .409 mark from beyond the arc, 6.2 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.4 steals in 35.1 minutes of action. Mitchell also logged his first career regular-season double-double against the Timberwolves on Jan. 25.

Ricky Rubio scored 18 points and handed out eight assists on Sunday. Rubio got a measure of revenge vs. his former team, hitting 8-of-14 shots with four rebounds, two steals, one 3-pointer and zero turnovers in 30 minutes. It was the first time he’s logged 30+ minutes since returning from a hamstring injury on Jan. 21, but he’s resumed a starting role and has made at least 50% of his shots in three of those four games.

Rudy Gobert is currently the only player in the NBA this season with 700+ points, 650+ rebounds and 100+ blocks. Gobert recorded 41 double-doubles in his first 50 games this season. The only player in Jazz history to record more double-doubles in the span of the team’s first 50 games is John Stockton, who posted 43 double-doubles in the 1991-92 season.

Why Bet on Trail Blazers?

Portland won its second in a row Saturday, 120-111 over Atlanta without All-Star guard Damian Lillard. CJ McCollum had 10 points and three assists in the third quarter to give Portland a three-point lead heading to the fourth. Atlanta pulled to 101-100 with 7:17 remaining, but Seth Curry scored 11 points during the Trail Blazers’ 13-0 game-closing run.

McCollum led Portland with 28 points (10-of-23 FGs, 6-of-7 FTs), 10 rebounds 10 assists for the first triple-double of his career. Over his last five games, McCollum is averaging 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists per with shooting splits of 47.8/45.7/84.6.

Jazz vs Trail Blazers is going to be a close one.

Al-Farouq Aminu filled the stat sheet in Saturday’s win over the Hawks, accounting for 17 points (4-of-5 FGs, 7-of-7 FTs), eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, one blocked shot and two 3-pointers. Making his second start of the season, Curry scored a season-high 22 points (8-of-13 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs) with three rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots, one steal, and four 3-pointers. Curry replaced Lillard (knee) in the starting lineup.

It’s thought that Lillard will play here. He has scored 1,311 points so far this season, which ranks third in the NBA. It was the most points scored by a Trail Blazers player through the first 50 games of a season in team history (Kiki Vandeweghe, 1986-87 – 1,294). With a three-pointer against Phoenix on Jan. 24, Lillard became the second player in NBA history to make a three-pointer in each of his team’s first 50 games (Dennis Scott – Orlando, 1995-96).

Portland has scored 120-plus points in six of its last 10 games. In that span, the Trail Blazers rank fifth in the league in scoring (119.0 points per game) seventh in field goal percentage (48.7%) and sixth in three-point percentage (38.3%).
