As the playoffs approach, the defending champions are in a bit of a freefall. The Lakers have dropped down into 7th in the Western Conference, which means that they would need to go into the play-in tournament if they stay there or drop further. They still have a shot at getting into the top 6, but they would likely need to win their final 4 games to make that happen. The good news for the Lakers is that LeBron James may potentially return from injury on Tuesday night against the Knicks. That may be just the boost this teams needs right now.
Another player looking to make a return this week is Kristaps Porzingis of the Dallas Mavericks, who has played only once since injuring his ankle on April 22. The Mavericks were hoping to have him back on Tuesday night, but it now looks as though it will be Wednesday before he makes his return. The timing Is perfect for Dallas, as they are in a great run of form that has seem them win 4 in a row to cement their place in the top 6. The return of Porzingis means that he will get some playing time before the playoffs begin.
It has been a disappointing season for the Boston Celtics, but it now looks as though things are about to get even worse for them. The Celtics are currently trying to claw their way into the top 6, but back-to-back losses has them stuck in the play-in tournament in the East. If they are to make it out and make a run this postseason, they are going to need to do it without Jaylen Brown in the lineup. The Celtics forward tore a ligament in his wrist and has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, which is a tough blow for Boston and their playoff hopes.
The negotiations for the sale of the Minnesota Timberwolves continue to drag on, with the latest 30-day negotiating window now come and gone. The group looking to purchase the T-Wolves includes former baseball star Alex Rodriguez, but it seems they are having problems finalizing a deal with current owner Glen Taylor. The deal looked to be all but done last month, with both sides entering into the 30-day window to close things up. While that term has now passed, there is still confidence that the sale will go through.
