Season Series
On Jan. 21, the Clippers were 102-101 upset winners in Philadelphia. Reggie Jackson scored 19 points, including two free throws with 18.2 seconds remaining, and the Clippers rallied from a 24-point second-half deficit in a shocker. Nicolas Batum had 15 points, seven rebounds and a key steal late in the game for the Clippers. Joel Embiid had 40 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Tobias Harris added 20 points and Tyrese Maxey had 19 points and eight assists for Philadelphia, which was up 68-44 with 7:39 left in the third.
Why Bet on Philadelphia?
The Sixers caught a break Wednesday at the Lakers because LA sat LeBron James. Philly won closer than expected, 126-121. Philadelphia led by 14 in the second half, but the Lakers got within 93-91 heading to the fourth quarter. Los Angeles focused its defense on Joel Embiid, but Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris hit big shots down the stretch as Philly hung on.
Embiid, the MVP favorite, had 30 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks. in Wednesday’s 126-121 win over the Lakers. It was Embiid’s his eighth double-double across 11 games in March. Embiid became the third player this season to post at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three blocks in a game. He joined Nikola Jokic and Anthony Davis.
Embiid seemed to be dealing with some back pain after a foul from Stanley Johnson and only took one shot after re-entering the game at the 8:24 mark of the fourth quarter. During that final stretch, he often resided on the perimeter and empowered any of Maxey, James Harden and Harris to run the show. Obviously, monitor that issue for Embiid.
James Harden had 24 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Harden sat out Philadelphia’s game against Miami on Monday to rest his left hamstring, but he was able to log 37 minutes in his return to the court against the Lakers. Harden continued to struggle from beyond the arc, hitting just 1-of-6 three-point attempts. Harden has gone just 6-for-28 (21.4 percent) from deep over his past five contests.
Harris posted a game-high plus-20 rating in 36 minutes of play. He totaled 20 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Maxey had 21 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Maxey was one of four Philadelphia starters to finish with 20-plus points, and he tied for the team lead with seven assists. It was the sixth straight game in which he has converted multiple three-pointers. Over that stretch, he has shot 45.4 percent (15-for-33) from beyond the arc.
Over the last few weeks, the lack of production from the Sixers’ second unit was becoming a growing issue but Doc Rivers’ bench unit is starting to show some signs of life. Multiple 76ers off the bench and were able to contribute in Wednesday’s win. Some of the standouts include Georges Niang (9 points, 3/4 3FG), DeAndre Jordan (9 points, 7 rebounds), and Furkan Korkmaz (6 points, 1 assist).
Why Bet on LA Clippers?
The Clippers lost their fourth in a row Tuesday, 127-115 in Denver. The Clippers chipped away at a big deficit, cutting a 14-point deficit at one point to 111-109. Monte Morris and Jeff Green responded with back-to-back 3-pointers, and the Nuggets closed on a 16-6 run.“We haven’t finished games the way we wanted to lately,” Clippers guard Reggie Jackson said. “We haven’t come up with as many wins as we’ve wanted to. But keep your spirits up and understand that we’ve put in a lot of work. It’s going to continue to show. We’re still in a great position. We’re going to continue to come out here and play our best basketball at the right time.”
Terance Mann hit 7-of-10 shots and 10-of-12 free throws for 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Mann has now scored 24, 14, 16 and 18 points in his last four games after going for just 6, 6, 9 and 7 points in his previous four. Mann missed his season high in scoring by one point Tuesday.
Isaiah Hartenstein had 14 points, two rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks in 24 minutes. Hartenstein has scored in double figures in 10 of his last 14 games and has racked up six blocks and four steals over his last two. He’s blocked 24 shots over his last 15 games.
Forward Robert Covington jammed his left hand on Tuesday and said he heard a “sound” but played through it and isn’t concerned. Covington finished with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocks Tuesday. He’s suddenly hot right now, averaging 16 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.0 blocks over his last two games after struggling to score for most of the season.
All-Star Paul George won’t play Friday but might be back soon. George participated in his first Clippers practice in more than three months Thursday as he tries to return prior to the start of the postseason. The Clippers said George, who has not played since Dec. 22, is in the next phase of his rehab program as he recovers from a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
“He is doing good,” Clippers coach Ty Lue said. “He hasn’t felt any pain so that is a positive thing. Just working on his conditioning and just making sure he can continue to go through the minimal contact without having any issue. So as of right now, it hasn’t been a problem.”
Norman Powell, who has been limited to three games after being acquired before the trading deadline, has begun shooting on the court with the team this week.
