Momentum
Just like every other sport, having some ‘feel-good’ momentum heading into the postseason is always a good thing. Look for teams that either won or played very well in their respective conference championships and back them to almost assuredly carry that play over into the first round at the very least. Remember, no team that has ever lost its opening conference tournament contest has ever gone on to win the national championship.
Get To Know Small Conference Schools
Look, I really don’t have to go back very far to illustrate my point that small-conference teams are posing more and more of a big threat to their ‘bigger name’ and bigger program counterparts. Just last year, UMBC became the first No. 16 seed to ever knock off a No. 1 seed when they took down Virginia by a whopping 20 points, 74-54 last year. No. 11 Loyola-Chicago dispatched No. 6 Miami, No. 3 Tennessee, No. 7 Nevada and No. 9 K-State before falling to No. 3 Michigan in the Final Four.
No. 13 Buffalo smacked No. 4 Arizona senseless in their tourney opener, No. 10 Butler took out No. 7 Arkansas and No. 13 Marshall beat No. 4 Wichita State. The point is, look for those small conference schools that look dangerous – because they really are in today’s more parity-laden college hoops world.
Be aware of home court advantages.
While the NCAA tournament is supposed to be played at neutral sites, the fact of the matter is that the selection committee often rewards several teams with relatively friendly playing locations that are close to a particular school’s actual location.
For example, No. 1 Villanova played their opener in nearby Pittsburgh. No. 3 Texas Tech opened in Dallas while No. 1 Kansas played their opener in Wichita. Look for ‘home-court’ advantages and exploit them college hoops bettors!
Cleaning the Glass
It’s pretty old-school, but the fact of the matter is that teams that rebound the ball well, have excellent chances of winning and advancing once March Madness rolls around. A year ago, North Carolina (1st), Duke (3rd), Texas A&M (5th) and Michigan State (8th), all finished inside the Top 10 in rebounding. This season, Carolina leads the nation in rebounding again, while Dukes is second and Michigan State, fourth.
If It’s Free…It’s For Me!
Another great tip that sharp college hoops bettors use is to identify and back teams that shoot free throws very well. Teams that can get it done at the charity stripe often cover the chalk by draining their free throws. This year, Marquette, Louisville, Tennessee and Virginia are among the nation’s top free throw shooting teams.
