With the 2020-21 NCAA college basketball season rolling right along despite some COVID-19 delays among several programs, it’s time to take a look at some of the biggest upsets among the Top 25 this season and just what they mean in terms of how they might potentially affect some teams once March Madness rolls around. Let’s get right to it so you can keep on betting against their College Basketball odds.
NCAA Basketball Betting – Upsets So Far This Season and What They Mean!
No. 9 Villanova
The now, ninth-ranked Wildcats were on the wrong end of a 81-73 overtime loss against a now, 15th-ranked Virginia Tech squad on Nov. 28. The preseason No. 3, Villanova still has the best chance of winning it all according to the latest BPI index. For Virginia Tech, the win verified that the Hokies will be March Madness worthy come next year.
No. 10 Duke (2-2)
The now, 10th-ranked Blue Devils were on the wrong end of a humbling 75-69 loss against then, eighth-ranked Michigan State on Dec. 1 while falling to No. 6 Illinois on Tuesday night. While Duke’s loss against the Fighting Illini’ wasn’t an upset, their loss against the Spartans was and right now, both defeats will damage Duke’s chances of getting a high seed once March Madness rolls around.
Maybe it’s the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic or maybe it’s his teams slow start, but now, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski is questioning whether there should be any college hoops going on right now at all. On Tuesday, Coach K commented on the issue following Duke’s 83-68 smackdown loss against No. 6 Illinois.
“I would just like for the safety, the mental and physical health of players and staff to assess where we’re at,” Krzyzewski said.
“People are saying the next six weeks are going to be the worst,” Krzyzewski added. “To me, it’s already pretty bad. On the other side of it, there are these vaccines that are coming out. By the end of the month, 20 million vaccine shots will be given. By the end of January or in February, another 100 million. Should we not reassess that? See just what would be best?”
No. 14 Texas (4-1)
The Longhorns upset, then 14th-ranked North Carolina a week ago in the Maui Invitational to legitimize their standing as a national championship contender, but Texas was on the wrong end of a narrow 68-64 loss against Villanova in their next game on Sunday.
No. 17 Texas Tech (4-1)
The Red Raiders were ranked 14th nationally going into their November 29 matchup against then, No. 17 Houston. After getting upset 64-53 in that contest, Texas Tech is down to 17th place in the national rankings while Houston (4-0) is up to an impressive seventh. Still, the Red Raiders will almost certainly get into the National Championship tournament – even if they do play in a loaded Big 12 conference that currently has a whopping five teams ranked inside the national Top 20.
No. 18 Virginia (3-1)
The now, 18th-ranked Cavaliers suffered a narrow 61-60 upset loss against San Francisco on November 27 and no, the legendary Bill Russell didn’t suit up for his Alma mater in that matchup. While the loss knocked Virginia out of its preseason No. 4 ranking, the Cavs will almost assuredly reach the NCAA Tournament in March, where their elite defense should put them legitimately in the championship mix!
