Boston College vs Duke NCAAB Odds, Preview & Prediction

Written by on February 5, 2019

Shouldn’t be much of a challenge for No. 2 Duke on Tuesday in ACC action as Zion Williamson and the Blue Devils host a struggling Boston College side that’s near the bottom of the conference at 2-6. The Blue Devils are sizable NCAAB odds favorites.

Season Series

First and only scheduled meeting. Last season, they also played just once and Duke was ranked No. 1 and lost 89-84 at Boston College. Ky Bowman scored 30 points, adding 10 rebounds and nine assists to help Boston College win its third straight game against the No. 1 team in The Associated Press Top 25. Jordan Chatman scored 22, hitting four straight free throws in the final 16 seconds to ice it.

The Blue Devils erased a 10-point deficit in the second half and led 79-75 with 3:30 to play. Boston College scored 12 of the next 14 points. Gary Trent Jr. scored 25 and Marvin Bagley III had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Duke.

Why Bet on Boston College?

BC comes off a 79-73 home loss to a struggling Notre Dame side on Saturday. Rarely used Irish reserve Nikola Djogo scored a career-high 21 points in his first start of the season to spark Notre Dame to a 13th straight win over the Eagles. The Irish halted a five-game losing streak and improved to 12-0 against the Eagles since they started facing them in league play.

BC led for just 3:08 the entire game, but used a 17-2 advantage on second-chance points and totaled 15 offensive rebounds. Ky Bowman led all scorers with 25 points. The junior guard added 10 rebounds and three assists to lead the Eagles in 40 minutes of action. Bowman now has a team-best seven double-doubles in points and rebounds on the season. It extended Bowman’s double-digit scoring streak to 29 – the longest in the ACC.

While BC isn’t very good, it does have one excellent player in Bowman, a finalist for the 2019 Bob Cousy Award. That’s given to the top point guard in the country. Bowman is currently the only player in the country to average 20.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game. He ranks third in the ACC in scoring and sixth in 3-point shooting. He is one of three ACC players on the list. Bowman is one of two players in BC history to accumulate 1,400 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists, and 100 steals. Bowman is one of only 18 players in ACC history to reach those career totals.

Nik Popovic is one of six ACC players to rank among the top 25 in the league in scoring and rebounding, and among the top 10 in FG percentage. The others: Duke’s Zion Williamson, John Mooney (Notre Dame), Cameron Johnson (UNC), Torin Dorn (NC State), and Jordan Nwora (Louisville).

BC is the only ACC team with four players ranking among the top 25 in the ACC in scoring. It’s the only ACC team to have three players averaging 7.0 rebounds per game.

Why Bet on Duke?

The Blue Devils won their fifth straight Saturday, 91-61 out of conference vs. St. John’s. Duke entered shooting just 31 percent from long distance — the worst percentage in school history — even after a 10-for-19 performance the game prior at Notre Dame. The Blue Devils promptly made their first four 3s against the Red Storm’s 2/3 zone — and then hit just 3 of 22 after that. The Red Storm were actually the last non-ACC team to beat Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium, pulling it off in 2000.

Freshman RJ Barrett posted his fourth double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds (two shy of career high), four assists and two steals in 33 minutes. Barrett is averaging 10.0 rebounds over the last six games. Freshman Zion Williamson scored a game-high 29 points, his 14th game this season reaching 20 points – the second most in the ACC this season behind Barrett (16).

Boston College vs Duke should be an easy victory for the Blue Devils.

Williamson has 10 25-point games this season, to extend his Duke freshman record. The previous mark of eight was held by Williamson, Barrett and Marvin Bagley III (2017-18). Over the last four games, Williamson is 43-of-54 (.796) from the field with 102 points.

Freshman Tre Jones finished with 13 points, a career-high seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals in 36 minutes. Jones is the nation’s only player averaging 5.0+ assists (5.56), 2.0+ steals (2.0) with a 5.0+ assist-turnover ratio (5.56). His assist-turnover ratio is second nationally. Freshman Cam Reddish scored 16 points and is averaging 13.9 points over the last six games. Over the six games prior, Reddish averaged 7.7 points.

Duke is now 126-22 all-time when playing as the No. 2-ranked team in the AP poll. Duke is 964-218 when playing as a ranked team under Coach Mike Krzyzewski, including 562-102 when playing as a ranked AP top five team under Coach K. Duke extended its streak of at least one three-pointer in a game to 1,042. It is the nation’s third-longest active streak.

Duke’s 7-1 start to ACC play is the team’s best record through eight games since 2010-11, and its 11th start of 7-1 or better through eight games since the 1990-91 season. Seven of those previous starts resulted in a win or share of the ACC regular season title.
